Title
Assistant Director, Intensive English Language Institute
Description

The Assistant Director is responsible for the administration of MSU’s Intensive English Language Institute and assists with immigration related matters for international students. The Assistant Director teaches English to non-native speakers unless otherwise prescribed. Responsible for development and oversight of the IEL Institute to provide a high-quality English language program to military personnel and to meet the needs of a culturally and academically diverse student population preparing to study at the university level. Prepares reports for government agencies as necessary. Supervises programs to offer intensive academic preparation which meets requirements for students on F-1 Visa status and for fully integrated study of English as a Second Language (ESL) for international military personnel. Designs lesson plans and three-level curriculum. Hires, trains and supervises staff who teach in the IELI program. Reports directly to the Director of Global Education. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Examples

Teaches 2 or 3 sections of courses in various levels of mastery for IELI. Manages the daily activities of the pre-academic IELI program and any government contracts. Provides tutoring when needed. Oversees the registration, testing, and placement of students and the scheduling of classes, including classroom assignments. Assesses student needs and goals and develops appropriate new and innovative curriculum content at all levels of instruction. Serves as a Designated School Official and assists with F-1 visa compliance for international students. Acts as liaison with University Housing and Residence Life for international students. Hires and supervises instructors. Observes instructors and provides mentoring and feedback; helps faculty integrate technology into the curriculum in the Smart classrooms, computer labs, and Media Center. Participates in marketing efforts with the goal of increasing enrollment. Develops marketing strategies and outreach efforts for new program development and partnerships.

Physical Condition
Experience

Two years’ experience in teaching ELS/EFL to an adult population. Requires experience with word processing and data base computer programs. Experience in creating and delivering professional development opportunities. Managerial experience strongly desirable.

Knowledge

Knowledge of teaching methods in English as a second language. Knowledge of personal computers and commonly used office software programs. Knowledge of office practices and procedures and personnel management. Knowledge of program marketing techniques.

Education

Bachelor's degree in related field, required. Master's degree and Advanced Certification in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) strongly preferred.
