Veterans Affairs Counselor/Degree Audit Specialist
Description

Serves as the first line of assistance for students using Federal and State Veterans Benefits. Performs responsible administrative and complex clerical duties assisting the Registrar in overall operations of the office. Reports to the Registrar through the Senior Associate Registrar and Associate Registrar.,

Examples

Helps prepare state and federal reports related to Veterans Benefits. Must follow the catalog degree requirements in determining if veterans, athletes and other students are meeting degree progress.  Hires and supervises VA Work study student assistants in accordance with federal and university policies.  Must be able to read, follow, and interpret government regulations related to the use of military benefits.  Serves as a member of the degree audit team. Performs degree audits, determines core completion and completion of degree requirements; works with students and their faculty advisors concerning course scheduling when problems occur.  Supervises over-all student record management, control, and security; may request purchases for veteran related and other job related items and maintains inventory controls, assists in budget planning and control, certifies veterans benefits. Assists with registrations and commencement ceremonies, special events such as Mustangs Rally preview days, and Imagine Graduation. Assists with implementation and maintenance, and/or training of use of the on-line degree audit system, and performs other related duties as assigned. May assist with new student orientations, and/or faculty staff training. May assist with checks for other state programs such as B-On Time, $1,000 tuition rebate eligibility, and Excessive Hours above degree requirements. May supervise the clerical work of several full-time and part-time employees. There is latitude for independent initiative and judgment. Varied problems require solution or informed referral to others for resolution

Physical Condition

Must have the physical ability to carry work supplies and to carry files to and from the vault.

Experience

At least five years of progressively responsible experience in academic administration, preferably with a State of Texas college or university. Requires two to three years prior administrative/secretarial/clerical experience. Experience with using and maintaining Degree Works, or similar degree audit software a plus.  Banner student information system experience a plus

Knowledge

Must have a good knowledge of student enrollment procedures, university policies, regulations, and degree requirements, as well as general admission requirements and transfer credit policies.  Considerable knowledge and use of good oral and written English and strong communication skills.  Ability to proofread and correct own work.   Must be knowledgeable in standard office practices and procedures and proficient in the use of personal computers and commonly used office software programs, especially the Microsoft Office Suite products, Word, Excel and Outlook.

Education

Bachelor's degree in counseling, accounting, business, or related fields is preferred. At least 2 years college work required. High school graduation plus equivalent academic related college or university experience may be acceptable.

Additional Requirements

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Diplomatic telephone and interpersonal skills required to handle difficult situations which may occur for students with academic problems, who are navigating re-entry into civilian life after serving in the armed forces; or international students with a limited understanding of the American system of higher education. Must have the ability to work well with people, to include interacting with faculty and administrators as well as students. Must be able to establish and maintain good working relationships with office staff. Must be able to type and have computer and word processing skills and 10-key operation by touch. Must have strong public relations skills in dealing with the public and students and a compassionate and caring customer service attitude. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality.  Must maintain and promote a spirit of teamwork as a member of the Degree Audit team. This position requires some evening and weekend work and occasional travel to professional conferences, training, or workshops. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
