- Description
Performs semiskilled work in the operation and maintenance of high pressure steam boilers, refrigeration chillers, and auxiliary equipment in the production and distribution of heating and cooling for the campus Repairs pumps and underground utilities, installs sprinkler systems, welds pipe and structural steel, operates all job related equipment, and performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Central Plant Superintendent and Assistant Plant Supervisor.
- Examples
Fires and continually monitors boilers. Starts, stops, and operates all other boiler/chiller plant equipment. Understands and reads gauges, and records gauge and meter readings. Performs chemical tests on chilled water, boiler water, tower water, and pool water and responds appropriately regarding chemical treatment. Answers telephone and responds appropriately; operates computer to create jobsheets and make HVAC adjustments as necessary; answers Police radio and telephone and responds to fire and security alarms, and makes appropriate telephone calls related to these. Dismantles, reassembles, repairs, cleans, paints, and performs other maintenance duties on pumps, motors, fans, and other auxiliary equipment; cleans and paints boilers, chillers, towers, and the plant itself; and under immediate supervision assist in the maintenance of boilers and chillers and other major plant equipment. May be required to check and maintain buildings and mechanical systems throughout Campus and tunnel system, as well as perform other duties as directed by the plant supervisor and assistant plant supervisor.
Installs, maintains and repairs pumps, sprinkler systems, plumbing fixtures, and gas, water, air and sewer systems. Replaces and repairs valves and cuts, threads, and joins pipes and fittings. Changes belts on air handlers.
- Physical Condition
Must be able to lift objects weighing fifty pounds or more and carry out scheduled daily maintenance activity, to include using and/or operating tools and equipment common to the mechanical and plumbing trades.
- Experience
Requires two to five years' experience in power plant operations. Should have considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment in a large high pressure steam heating generating plant and refrigeration plan. Plumbing experience and license desirable. Experience should include boilers, condensate tower, HAVC systems, meter reading, and records maintenance. Some math and computer skills required in addition to ability to work and communicate with other maintenance personnel.
- Knowledge
Working knowledge of high pressure steam boiler operation, refrigeration plant operating principles, and the functions and mechanics of such stationary plant equipment as turbines, compressors, pumps, and motors. Ability to operate, repair, and maintain plant equipment, and to detect defects or malfunctions in equipment while in operation. Ability to read meters, keep accurate records of plant operation and submit reports. Ability to analyze operating difficulties in equipment, and react quickly and calmly under emergency operating conditions.
- Education
Graduation from a standard high school, including or supplemented by vocational training or other special training related to the field of work.
- Additional Requirements
Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis.
