The Fain College of Fine Arts and the Harvey School of Visual Arts (HSOVA) at Midwestern State

University invite applications for a Chair position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, to begin

August 2020. The Fain College of Fine Arts aims to be an agent of change in the community,

responding to fast-moving social issues and generating change through the arts. The Harvey School

of Visual Arts is a NASAD-accredited, dynamic and growing academic/artistic unit. As the only public

liberal arts institution in the state of Texas, Midwestern State University values and supports the

contribution of the arts to the university and the community at large. The HSOVA enjoys upgraded,

attractive and spacious facilities, a dynamic and committed faculty, and growing influence in and

support from the community. HSOVA's computer lab is equipped with 19 Mac stations with the

complete Adobe Creative Suite software, and archival inkjet and laser printers. Computers and

software are upgraded regularly. All Macs are equipped with Wacom painting and drawing tablets.

The School of Visual Arts has several large format laser printers available for professional and

program work.

This is an ideal position for a transformative scholar, artist, educator, and leader seeking an

environment of innovation and academic excellence, with a focus on student success. We desire a

highly motivated individual to strengthen and grow the School of Visual Arts, adding to the efforts of

existing faculty. We are committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and preparing students

to become successful professionals in local and global contexts. The successful candidate will work

collaboratively with faculty and administration to enhance the academic programs and operations of

the HSOVA. The School of Visual Arts underwent a successful NASAD re-accreditation process in

2018, and is now poised to explore new directions that will increase the profile of its graduates.


Serve as Chair of the department, and teach a combination of classes according to

established institutional policy and practice for Chairs. Currently, the Chair position has a reduced

teaching load to compensate for administrative duties, that will include courses in digital photography

and others as needed. Chair appointment is a 9-month contract. While no teaching duties are

required during the summer months, some administrative duties may continue into that period. As

the institutional representative for NASAD, the Chair coordinates all aspects of the department to

ensure continuous and successful accreditation. This position oversees and coordinates

departmental assessment, budget operations, facilities operations, class scheduling, applying and

executing all pertinent institutional policies for the school, departmental and university committee

work, review of tenure and promotion applications at the departmental level, recruitment and

retention efforts, execution of administrative processes and procedures, among other duties and

responsibilities, including duties as assigned by the Dean of the college. The Chair is expected to

cultivate and maintain strong relationships with alumni and donors of the School. Moreover, the Chair

has the unique responsibility to maintain a collegial environment in the department and to provide

academic and artistic leadership, creating the path for a shared vision with the faculty and



Minimum Qualifications: An MFA or other terminal degree in visual arts is required. Specialization

or strong background and experience in the area of photography is needed. Demonstrated

successful teaching, artistic and professional achievements for an appointment at the level of

Associate or Full Professor are required.

Preferred Qualifications: Additional background in digital arts, new media, or graphic design is

highly desirable. Previous leadership experience and an excellent teaching record is a plus. The

successful candidate should have a demonstrated record of leadership, a collaborative style,

knowledge and vision of the future in the visual arts, and a passion for administration and acumen for

detail-oriented operations.

The ideal candidate should have conceptual and technical grounding in all aspects of photography.

They should have an ability to teach all practices of fine art photography and some experience with

related media, which might include new technologies, installation, film, video, performance, and/or

social practice, and should have broad knowledge and understanding of contemporary art.


This position is designated as security sensitive and requires the finalist to complete a criminal background check.
