- Description
Responsible for the supervision of physical plant custodial staff and for the cleaning and care of designated university buildings. Work involves planning, assigning, and reviewing the work of forepersons and subordinates and maintaining effective working relations with occupants. Work is performed with considerable independence. Reports to the Manager, Grounds and Custodial Services.
- Examples
Hires and evaluates custodial staff. Plans, assigns, and reviews work of forepersons and subordinates. Maintains staffing files and prepares disciplinary reports. Develops and coordinates maintenance schedules for custodial staff. Schedules moves and event set-ups. Prepares custodial man-hour estimates for special projects and events. Works with occupants of the buildings to achieve effective service. Evaluates effectiveness of cleaning products, supplies and equipment and makes recommendations for purchase. Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Physical Condition
Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty pounds. Ability to stand for long periods of time, to climb stairs and ladders, to stoop, bend, and reach overhead. Sufficient strength, stamina, and mobility to perform a variety of manual tasks associated with duties. Must be able to work with and around cleaning products and chemicals.
- Experience
Requires a minimum of five years supervisory experience managing a large group of people in building maintenance/custodial work. Should have considerable experience in the care, operations, and maintenance of large buildings and in the supervision of custodial workers in an institutional setting.
- Knowledge
Thorough knowledge of building maintenance methods, including modern methods of cleaning and use of cleaning supplies. Knowledge of the use, care, and repair of all types of manual and mechanical equipment and tools. Extensive knowledge of building maintenance chemicals. Ability to effectively plan, assign, and review work of a large group of subordinates. Computer skills in Windows, word processing, data base, scheduler/calendar, and spread sheet. Knowledge of MSDS standards related to cleaning supplies and chemicals.
- Education
High school graduation or equivalent. Some college work desirable.
- Additional Requirements
Ability to analyze and solve work problems. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with occupants, associates, and others. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis.
