Plumber
Description

Skilled work involving the installation, maintenance, and service of plumbing systems. Involves installing, maintaining, repairing, and servicing gas, water, air, and sewer lines. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Central Plant Superintendent. The employee in this class may work as lead man or supervise work of plumber's helper or laborers. Work involves heavy lifting, crawling through tunnels and attics, and danger from hot water burns, gas fumes, and exposure to inclement weather. Position is distinguished from Plumber I by the requirement to perform work of greater complexity.

Examples

Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing fixtures, and gas, water, air, and sewer systems. Replaces and repairs valves, and cuts, threads, and joins pipes and fittings. Maintains record of materials and labor expended on each job. May occasionally act as lead man or supervise helpers and laborers. Uses all tools of the plumbing trade, including sewer roto-rooter, drain line roto-rooter, threading machines, drill presses, and hand tools.

Physical Condition

Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty pounds.

Experience

Four years of experience as a licensed journeyman plumber.

Knowledge

Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the plumbing trade. Possession of a State plumber's license. Ability to read, interpret, and work from rough sketches, blueprints, and drawings. Thorough skill in the use of the standard tools, equipment, and machines of the plumbing trade. Physical ability to perform moderately heavy physical work, and remain outdoors in inclement weather.

Education

Graduation from high school or vocational school.

Additional Requirements

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Four years plumbing experience required with a Texas state plumbing license. Have knowledge of plumbing fixtures, parts and supplies with experience in trouble shooting and repairing problems. Be able to use power and hand tools, read blue prints, and work in difficult weather and space conditions. Heavy lifting required. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Employment physical required. *A valid Texas driver's license is required. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is designated as security sensitive (low) and requires a criminal background check.
