Title
Painter / Maintenance Technician Housing
Description

This is skilled work in the painting of buildings, fixtures, and equipment. Work involves preparation of various types of surfaces for painting and applying paint by use of spray guns and/or brushes. Work is performed under general supervision of the Residence Hall Maintenance Foreperson. Work requires working on ladders and scaffolds, as well as bending and kneeling. The position will paint exterior stairwells at Sunwatcher Apartments during the first year, and transition to other painting needs in university housing thereafter and during inclement weather events. Also performs general repair and maintenance work in residence halls and apartments involving carpentry, limited plumbing, limited electrical, and limited appliance repairs.

Examples

Prepares surfaces for paint by scraping, sandpapering, wire brushing, and cleaning. Mixes, matches, and applies paints, varnishes, lacquers, shellacs, and other finishes. Tapes and beds sheetrock. Refinishes and restores interior and exterior painted surfaces. Paints new construction or modifications and alterations to buildings using brush, roller, or spray equipment. Refinishes office furniture, cabinets, shelves, table tops, and other furnishings. Maintains record of materials and labor expended on each job. Observes adequate fire prevention, safety, and housekeeping practices in all operations. Performs general maintenance and repair work such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical. Performs other duties as assigned.

Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty pounds

Experience

Requires two or more years’ experience as a skilled painter. Prefer additional experience in a broad range of general maintenance work including carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical.

Knowledge

Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, equipment, and materials of the painting trade. Considerable knowledge of the proper preparation of surfaces to be painted, and of proper methods of mixing and matching all types of paints. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the painting trade. Knowledge of building maintenance methods, materials, tools and practices. Skill with the use and care of power equipment and tools. Must have a general knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, building materials, and hardware.

Education

Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Vocational technical school training in carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, appliance, or other general maintenance systems preferred.

Additional Requirements

Must have some administrative skills and the ability to follow oral or written instructions; knowledge in asbestos operations and maintenance programs; the physical ability to work from ladders or scaffolds and in uncomfortable positions. Must be fully aware of the hazards and safety precautions necessary to do the above, in an efficient manner. Must be capable of maintaining records and reports for daily duties and preventative maintenance. Must be capable of working independently with limited supervision. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *A valid Texas driver's license is required. *Requires employment physical exam.
