Associate Dean
Description

Supports the mission and strategic direction of the Gunn College of Health Sciences and Human Services by assisting the Dean in providing academic, administrative, and operational leadership. The role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities including academic program oversight, student success initiatives, resource management, community partnerships, and coordination across departments. The role represents the College within the University, to external partners, and serves as acting Dean when designated.

Examples

Assists the Dean in strategic planning, implementation, and assessment of College initiatives, ensuring alignment with the mission and long‑term goals both of the College and MSU Texas. Provides leadership and oversight for undergraduate and graduate academic programs, supports curriculum development, and innovation to meet the evolving needs of the College. Advances student success by championing strategies that strengthen recruitment, retention, progression, and graduation. Collaborates closely with academic counselors, the recruitment specialist, and program leadership to reduce barriers and improve student outcomes. Contributes to budget development, monitoring, and resource allocation. Supports grant initiatives and participates in long‑range planning related to facilities, programs, laboratories, equipment, and instructional resources. Provides leadership in the Dean’s absence, assists with policy development and implementation, and facilitates effective communication between the Dean’s Office and academic departments. Leads special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned to advance the College’s priorities.

Experience

The position requires a record of successful college teaching and service at the department, college, and university levels, along with a scholarly or creative activity record sufficient for appointment to the faculty at the rank of Associate Professor. Applicants must have at least three (3) years of academic leadership experience.

Knowledge

Requires familiarity with accreditation processes and regulatory compliance. Have strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills and the ability to apply strategic thinking and data-informed decision-making. Must understand higher education governance and be able to manage multiple priorities in a complex academic environment. Requires a commitment to ethical leadership, transparency, and service-oriented administration, along with strong conflict resolution skills. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in data and reporting is essential.

Education

A doctorate or terminal degree in a discipline represented within the College is required.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership and managerial skills, the ability to communicate effectively with constituencies, and proficiency in data analysis. The position requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the College and University.
