- Advising Program Specialist
- Description
This position coordinates advising initiatives and efforts across the campus, provides transitional advising support, maintains the advising webpage, fields advising inquiries to the appropriate offices, and facilitates advising training opportunities for faculty and staff.
- Examples
Works with students transitioning out of programs to provide information regarding degree pathways, educational options, and requirements. Works with advisors across campus to coordinate advising correspondence, serves on the Academic Advising Committee, and creates training modules for on-going professional development. Collaborates across campus to clarify advising policies and procedures. Advocates for advising initiatives based on data-informed needs. Maintains complete and accurate confidential student records and related data. Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Physical Condition
- Experience
Minimum of two years previous experience in academic advising preferred. Must be experienced in the use of computer software applications (Microsoft Office preferred). Proficient with MSU student software systems.
- Knowledge
Must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task. Must have knowledge of or be able to quickly learn the University's core curriculum and additional various requirements of academic programs, and the MSU Student Data System.
- Education
Master's degree required.
- Additional Requirements
Must have a demonstrated interest in working with and assisting students and be able to work effectively with a heavy volume of student traffic. Must be able to keep complete, accurate, and confidential records. Must have the ability to learn, interpret and apply detailed academic requirements to the needs of individual students. Host training workshops and other professional development activities. Travel to advising-related conferences may also be required.
