Title
Program Specialist, Tutoring and Academic Support Programs
Description

The TASP Program Specialist teaches up to a 12 hour load of MWSU courses each long semester unless otherwise prescribed. Is responsible for coordinating, and implementing innovative programs and services particularly for first-year students and students for whom the university's academic requirements are particularly challenging. Assists the Director with other duties as assigned. Reports to the Director of Tutoring and Academic Support Programs.

Examples

Teaches four sections of MWSU courses in the long semesters including 1233 College Connections and MWSU 1003 Skills for Success. Collaborates with and provides assistance to personnel in TASP and other campus stakeholders to implement and develop best practices in first year student courses. Participates in the annual Common Read selection and coordinates related activities. Holds office hours to meet with individual students. Advises special populations of students.  Assists the Director with the development of new innovative programs and services to meet TASP’s mission. Prepares and presents informational presentations for TASP and university sponsored events. Serves on university councils and committees as required. Maintains appropriate records. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.

Physical Condition
Experience

Minimum of three years' relevant experience working with college students and teaching at the college level preferred.

Knowledge

Knowledge of the issues, trends, theories, and methodologies related to first year students learning and student retention. Must have strong public speaking experience. Must be familiar with classroom protocol and assessments as well as best practices in one-to-one student discussions and building a strong rapport with students. Ability to follow generally accepted office practices and procedures and proficiency in the use of computers and software programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and proficiency in Banner preferred.

Education

Master's degree required.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must have a demonstrated strong interest in and capacity for teaching. Teaching experience preferably at a four-year institution of higher education. Must be well-organized; posses excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; be able to work effectively with a diverse student body, and be able to work collaboratively with colleagues to set, plan, and achieve ambitious goals. * This position is designated as security sensitive (mod) and requires a criminal background check.
