Custodian, Lead
Description

Performs routine custodial work to maintain cleanliness of assigned area or building(s). Work involves cleaning and caring for buildings and surrounding premises; maintaining custodial tools and equipment; requesting supplies; performing minor building and equipment repairs and other related duties. Works under moderate supervision. Instructions are received in oral or written form and work is periodically inspected by a supervisor for conformance with established standards of building care and maintenance. Acts as an assistant to the foreperson on duty; and as directed, assists in the supervision of custodial staff. May be assigned to relieve forepersons of cleaning assignments in their absence. Reports directly to a custodial foreperson under the general supervision of the Manager, Custodial & Residence Life Maintenance.

Examples

Performs custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, operating a buffer, spray waxing, and dry and wet stripping. Performs rest room maintenance and cleaning, replenishing supplies and applying cleaning chemicals. Performs carpet maintenance, cleans office furniture, walls, and windows, and empties trash. Assists forepersons on duty as necessary with delivery of supplies; verifies custodial personnel are at their work stations; and assists with cleaning of buildings when one or more forepersons are absent. May assist in discipline of custodians for time and attendance infractions. Reports other disciplinary issues to the foreperson on duty. May be assigned to facilitate set-up and take-down for special events, move and set up furniture, and deliver supplies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

*Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty pounds. Ability to stand for long periods of time, to climb stairs and ladders, to stoop, bend, and reach overhead. Sufficient strength, stamina, and mobility to perform a variety of manual tasks associated with duties. Must be able to work with and around cleaning products and chemicals.

Experience

Should have at least six months experience in janitorial or general cleaning work. Must have a documented record of excellent initiative and above average performance ratings.

Knowledge

Must know the modern methods of cleaning rest rooms. Must have a working knowledge of cleaning supplies and custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners; buffers, wet and dry pick-ups; have some knowledge of carpet maintenance and care; and must have knowledge of custodial chemicals and their application. Willingness to learn how to operate battery powered walk-behind and ride-on equipment to include floor scrubbers, carpet extractors/vacuums and restroom cleaning machines.

Education

Requires education sufficient to receive and follow oral and written directives, as well as follow instructions in the mixing and use of chemicals and the operation of power equipment.

Additional Requirements

Ability to work unsupervised. Must be able to understand hazardous materials handling and be able to maintain cleaning supplies inventory. *May be required to work a non-traditional schedule. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *May work evenings or weekends. *Requires employment physical exam. *A valid Texas driver's license is preferred.
