- Description
Responsible for maintenance and repair of all laboratory equipment and support of engineering programs. The primary role of the position is to machine parts for the students, faculty, and other MSU departments as directed. Responsible for the use of initiative and independent judgment in constructing instruments to precise standards from start to finish from rough sketches or general verbal instructions. Provides advanced technical skills in connection with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of scientific and mechanical equipment. Assists faculty members and students with engineering design projects and performs responsible duties involved in the construction. Serves as a resource person consulting with faculty and students concerning design and application of research equipment in machine shop. Reports to the Chair of the McCoy School of Engineering.
- Examples
Assists with fabrication, assembly and repair of instruments and machines, usually for scientific research, engineering or teaching projects, by the use of lathes, milling machines, drill presses, saws, 3D printers, and related machines and tools. Assists with organizing and directing specific projects; reads blueprints, sketches, and works from models. Diagnoses, calibrates, repairs and maintains equipment. Assists with training students in fabrication processes and lab safety issues. Orders parts, maintains inventory, assists with labs, managing equipment, and preparing purchase orders. Maintains a machining schedule and is assessable to students and faculty at all times. Participates in departmental events. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Physical Condition
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Some lifting of heavy equipment may be required.
- Experience
Requires experience with machine tools, reading blueprints, and equipment maintenance.
- Knowledge
Must be familiar with CAD (SolidWorks), CAM (Master CAM), manual machines, welding practices, industrial codes and standards, and knowledge of English and metric unit systems. Must be able and willing to learn new procedures.
- Education
High school diploma required, vocational school preferred. Equivalent work-related experience is preferred.

Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to communicate and provide feedback in a professional and respectful manner.
