Carpentry Foreperson

Performs and supervises carpentry work involving the construction, repair, and maintenance of University structures, fixtures and furnishings. Work involves planning, laying out, and assigning work and supervising carpenters in the maintenance and repair of building structures and fixtures, including cabinet making as well as rough and finish carpentry. The foreperson reports to the Director of Construction Services.


Requisitions all necessary supplies and materials to ensure that normal work flow is not interrupted. Furnishes cost estimates on individual jobs as requested. Maintains records of materials and labor expended on each job for cost accounting purposes. Checks and approves work orders after they have been completed. Supervises carpenters performing work involving new construction, remodeling, installation, and repair of cabinets, shelves, doors, windows, roofs, floor covering, walls, furniture, and other structures, fixtures, and equipment.

Physical Condition

Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty (50) pounds required. Must also be able to operate power drills and saws safely, work on scaffolds and roofs, and tolerate exposure to the elements while working outside.


Five years of experience as a carpenter, including supervisory experience.


Thorough knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practice of the carpentry trade. Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of skilled carpenters. Must have thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the carpentry trade.


Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school, or GED.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must be able to perform carpentry at a high level of skill; interpret and work from penciled sketches, drawings, plans, and blueprints; and to make material and labor cost estimates. Must have the ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with faculty, staff and students. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Physical exam required. *A valid Texas driver's license is required.* Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
