Director, Planning and Assessment

Leads and develops a comprehensive institutional assessment and planning program to support the university's mission and strategic initiatives. Designs, directs, and supports academic and administrative program reviews and related activities that demonstrate institutional effectiveness. Reports to the Vice President for Enrollment Management with a dotted line to the Provost.


Plans, organizes, and coordinates strategic assessment programs, projects, and activities campus wide. Develops and establishes operating goals, policies, and procedures for the assessment office, as appropriate; recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency. Supports continuous academic program assessment (curricular and co-curricular activities) and improvement of student learning through consultation, mentoring and hands-on training. Leads the development, organization, analysis and reporting of student learning outcomes and related activities to support planning activities. Promotes internal and external communication of assessment results. Supports the ongoing development and implementation of comprehensive outcomes assessment programs for all academic and administrative units that support the goals the university's strategic plan. Participates in the collection and analysis of various assessment data to support departmental accreditation and program reviews, including dissemination of results and assisting others with understanding and appropriately using them. Interprets assessment findings and prepares an annual assessment report to summarize such findings, with particular emphasis on the quality of the assessment efforts and findings that influence institutional decision-making and policy development. Provides strategic advice and consultation to leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of modifications and enhancements to existing operations, systems, and procedures. Coordinates all assessment and institutional effectiveness activities needed for compliance purposes and for SACSCOC accreditation. Will assist other college-and/or program-level specialized accreditations. Records, stores, manages, and disseminates confidential and sensitive assessment data, as appropriate. Leads and supervises office personnel, to include work allocation, training, and problem resolution; provides performance management feedback as appropriate. Recommends and participates in the development of university policies and procedures; may serve on planning and policy-making committees. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Physical Condition

Demonstrated ability for effective organizational skills and ability to connect to the institutional strategy while displaying attention to detail. Ability to synthesize and analyze quantitative and qualitative data and prepare and present reports effectively. Ability to plan, create, program, and manage statistical computer databases across multiple hardware and operating system platforms/environments. Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions. Technical leadership and supervisory skills, and the ability to motivate staff productivity and performance.


Expertise in assessment, data analysis and educational outcomes.  Knowledge of State and Federal postsecondary education accountability initiatives and trends. Knowledge of regional, national, and specialized postsecondary accreditation standards, practices, and goals. Knowledge of institutional self-assessments and student outcomes assessment principles, methods and techniques. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Knowledge and understanding of integrated program planning, development, and administration within a public institution environment. Knowledge of University data systems, definitions, and procedures.Knowledge of budget preparation and fiscal management. Proficient in the use of a variety of software packages, including SPSS or similar statistical package, Microsoft Access, Excel, and Windows


Master's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Ph.D. preferred.
