Assistant Director, Athletics for Student Athlete Development/Community Outreach

Responsible for coordinating programming to enhance the focus areas within Student-Athlete Development of: academic success, community outreach and service, personal development and life skills, career enhancement and readiness, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Responsible for providing opportunities for student athletes to learn skills outside of the athletic area that will equip them to graduate and be better prepared for post-graduate challenges of careers, relationships, and community involvement. Responsible for providing training seminars and workshops to educate the entire student athlete population in growth, mind, body, and spirit in concert with other university departments and for the benefit of the entire student population to enhance opportunities for graduation and lifetime success. Reports to the Director of Athletics.


Coordinates and collaborates with University departments to provide additional academic support for student-athletes. Develops, manages, and monitors strategic study programs to include providing mentors and tutors to at risk student-athletes with learning-impacting disabilities. Builds strategic relationships with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and community and campus partners to engage student-athletes in service opportunities. Manages and/or develops a tracking system to stay up to date with service hours for individuals, teams, and entire department. Researches service learning programs, curriculum, and research to provide cutting edge programming intended to support student-athletes growth toward developing purpose and identity outside of sport. Builds relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and athletic staff to provide effective programs related to diversity and inclusion, mental health and wellness, drugs and personal identity, and healthy relationships. Meets directly with student athletes from teams to promote career readiness with the Career Management Center (e.g. review resumes, review cover letters, conduct mock interviews, and track progress toward desired career). Provides support to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Promotes student-athlete well-being and enhance communication between student-athletes and administration. Coordinate student-athlete academic nominations and honor recognition. Assists with Game Day Operations and Marketing. Other duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

Three or more years' experience in working with student athletes. Previous experience in counseling preferred. Must be experienced in the use of computer software applications. Experience with MSU student software system desirable.


General knowledge of the University's core curriculum and degree requirements of the various academic programs. Thorough knowledge of applicable NCAA rules and regulations. Must have good organizational and administrative skills.


Master's degree required. Appropriate coursework and training in human development and career counseling.
