Director, Recreational Sports and Wellness Center

Responsible for oversight of the university Recreational Sports and Wellness Center offering a comprehensive campus recreation program through sport and physical activity. Serves as the University's Coordinator for Summer Camp programs. Reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students.


Design and promote a framework of holistic wellness programs appropriate for the university population. Promote student participation in Wellness Center and Recreational Sports activities. Coordinate and schedule wellness seminars and CPR/AED classes for members of the campus community. Responsible for hiring and training Wellness Center staff. Responsible for maintenance and operation of the campus AED program and purchase and maintenance of fitness equipment for the Wellness Center. Responsible for chemical maintenance of the aquatics area, coordination of appropriate water safety classes, and verification of lifeguard certification. Oversees Wellness Center memberships and promotes a safe and healthy atmosphere for Wellness Center participants. Develops and implements policies affecting university wellness, maintains records, evaluates the effectiveness of services provided, prepares reports, and manages Wellness Center budget. Coordinates contractual, scheduling, logistical, and compliance arrangements for university and non-university sponsored summer camps and conferences held on campus. Assists with the implementation and oversight of the University's Youth Protection Program. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

Requires the ability to demonstrate the proper use of fitness equipment, lifeguarding techniques, exercise, and sports equipment. Occasional heavy lifting of objects weighing over 50 pounds is required.


Minimum of three years professional experience in effectively administering a comprehensive recreation, sport, fitness, and wellness program applicable to a university setting is required; five years preferred. Must possess a record of innovative leadership in managing people, programs, services, and budgets. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in using sport and physical activity to build positive community and enhance the development and health of diverse individuals.


Must be knowledgeable in a wide variety of fitness, health, wellness, and sports activities. Must understand the concepts of health and wellness and be able to work with other health-related departments and organizations to best meet the interests and needs of students. Must possess strong management, organization, and administrative skills. Must have knowledge of standard business practices, computer software programs, and the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).


A master's degree is required, doctorate preferred, in a field appropriate for recreational sports, health, fitness, and wellness programs. Distinction as a certified personal trainer, group fitness instructor or trainer, and other similar positions preferred.

Additional Requirements

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must be certified in the use of CPR/AED, preferably as a trainer. This position has a flexible work schedule which includes some evenings and weekends. Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, administrators, and employees is required. Must have the sensitivity and skill to work with a diverse and multicultural student and employee population. *Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. *Regular reliable attendance is required. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis.*Designated as a Responsible Employee as outlined by Title IX. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
