Mandatory MSU Student Health Insurance

Specific inquiries about the below information should be addressed to Health Services.

All global scholars enrolled at Midwestern State University, on a F1 or F2 visa, are required to have the University Student Health Insurance plan through My AHP Care.

Waiver Process

MSU Texas has established guidelines under which an international student may request a waiver of the school's student health insurance by providing proof of comparable alternative health insurance coverage. To be approved for a waiver, your alternate health coverage must meet or exceed the requirements set in the system guidelines and detailed under the waiver requirements.

Waivers for the fall 2026 semester will open on July 13, 2026. You may apply for a waiver to opt-out here.

Waiver Requirements

Students will be automatically enrolled in the mandatory insurance plan and changes will be applied to their billing statement unless they:

  1. Meet one of the waiver requirements
    Eligible Coverage Types
    • Waivers will only be approved for students who are covered under:
      • U.S. Employer-sponsored plans
      • Military/Tricare
      • Embassy-sponsored plans
  2. Apply for the waiver
  3. Are notified they have been approved for a waiver from Academic Health Plan.

Please note that individual or personal insurance plans, including Marketplace plans, do not meet waiver requirements and should not be purchased for this purpose.

Marketplace Plans and Subsidies
International students are not eligible for federal subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), as outlined in Internal Revenue Code Section 36B.

Apply for a waiver

You can apply for a waiver here. All requests will be subject to review.

Once the waiver is submitted and your proof of documents are received, you will be notified via email within 5-10 business days of your waiver request. If your student account has already been charged, it may take up to 10-14 business days once the waiver has been approved to remove the charges and/or process a refund.

If your tuition is due before your waiver application is processed, pay the fee and if your waiver is approved, a refund will be processed through your MSU Texas student account at a later date.
