Internships

Internships are an excellent way to gain relevant experience in your field and increase your chances of landing a job upon graduation. It is also a common way for employers to evaluate and train candidates for positions within their companies, and is often used as a prolonged interview process. You gain experience, and the employer can assess your work habits and determine if you are a good fit within their company. It is a win-win situation. 

At MSU Texas School of Engineering, there is no formalized internship process. However, internships are highly encouraged. This is because it is crucial to gain real-world experience to enter the workforce. the workforce. Local employer support for the MSU engineering program has opened up internship opportunities in our community. Most engineering internships are paid.

Finding Internships:

  • It takes time to find an internship, so start early.
  • Talk to fellow students and alumni. They often have experiences to share and may have insights on how to proceed with your job/internship search.
  • Talk to your faculty. They have connections to employers in the community.
  • Use “Handshake,” MSU’s job database. International students can use filters like "will sponsor", "does not require US work visa", or accepts OPT/CPT".
  • Go to LinkedIn. Use linkedin.com/in/deidre-Frazier-07311282 to see current available engineering internships and jobs. 
  • Attend career fairs and network with employers. Oftentimes, they might not say they have internships when they do. It does not hurt to ask them.
  • An internship does not need to say that it is an internship. Any job that offers experience that will give you experience in your field can be considered an internship.
  • Join professional organizations. They are a great way to network and oftentimes post internships and jobs on their website.

Resources for International Students:
