Our department offers two majors in history—a BA in History and a BA in History with a Secondary Certification (Grades 7-12)— as well as a minor.

BA in History

History majors take a range of classes in American, European, and World history. All history majors must take the following courses:

  • American History to 1865 (HIST 1133)
  • American History since 1865 (HIST 1233)
  • Survey of Western Civilization (HIST 1333) or World Civilizations to 1500 (HIST 1353)
  • Survey of Western Civilization (HIST 1433) or World Civilizations since 1500 (HIST 1453)
  • The Writing of History (HIST 3903)
  • Capstone in History (HIST 4993) 
  • One upper-level course in European History
  • One upper-level course in American History
  • One upper-level course in World History
  • Three upper-level elective courses

BA in History with Secondary Certification (Grades 7-12)

History majors pursuing their secondary certification take a range of classes in American, European, and World history in preparation for teaching. These majors must take the following courses:

  • American History to 1865 (HIST 1133)
  • American History since 1865 (HIST 1233)
  • Survey of Western Civilization (HIST 1333) 
  • Survey of Western Civilization (HIST 1433)
  • Survey of Texas History (HIST 3033)
  • Comparative World Religions and Cultures (HIST 3133)
  • Twentieth Century Europe (HIST 4433)
  • One upper-level course in European History
  • One upper-level course in American History
  • One upper-level course in World History

Minor in History

To minor in history, students must take the following courses:

  • Survey of Western Civilization (HIST 1333) 
  • Survey of Western Civilization (HIST 1433)
  • Twelve additional semester hours in history (6 of which must be upper-level)
