What is this course?
Students will learn the historical and contemporary contributions that London has provided to the field of art. During the month-long stay in London, students gain new perspectives and build personal connections through visits to museums, artist studios, historical sites, and more. This course is part of the British Studies Program.
During their time in London, students examine a broad range of works at notable museums such as the Tate Modern, British Museum, National Gallery, Victoria & Albert. Outside of major museum venues, students also gain access to alternative processes through viewing graffiti landmarks, contemporary galleries, and private art studios. Outside of class time, the city itself has much to the offer in its rich culture, landmarks, and history.
Students create small works as a response to the site visits, weekly topics, and dialogue as a group. Through journaling and technical exploration, a personal body of work is formed. Students create additional work upon returning back in late Summer, followed by an exhibition for the public. Themes, narratives, technical processes, and other elements often carry over into further works and impacting later semesters. Art students visit London every 2 years.
