Description

Reporting to the Provost, the Museum Director oversees day-to-day operations and supports the strategic plan of the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at Midwestern State University (WFMA). Oversees the permanent collections of the Museum to align with accreditation requirements. Plans, supervises, and evaluates exhibition initiatives. Provides effective financial management for the Museum. Supervises administrative, educational, curatorial, and events staff. Supports the Educate goal of Midwestern State University and the Fain College of Fine Arts. Works with the Museum Advisory Board to engage the Wichita Falls community in Museum initiatives.

 
Examples

Coordinates museum initiatives with the university, upholds MSU and Texas Tech University System policies and standards, and maintains museum best practices and standards. Works with artists, galleries, lenders, and/or museums to curate exhibitions, and works with staff on exhibition design, programs, marketing, and evaluation. Oversees the Museum budget and revenue generation, and collaborates with Sponsored Programs and Advancement to cultivate grants and donor relationships that support exhibitions and programs. Works with staff to develop goals, plans, calendars, reports, and budgets related to exhibitions, collections, and their specific responsibilities. Enhances the academic role of the Museum through collaborative programming with the academic colleges and student organizations, and can teach up to one course a semester in a museum studies program. Solicits feedback from the WFMA Advisory Board on Collectors Circle, exhibition programming, fundraising, and other initiatives of the Museum. Performs other relevant duties as assigned.

 
Physical Condition

Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over thirty pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods of time, to climb stairs, stoop, bend, and reach overhead. Sufficient strength, stamina, and mobility to perform manual tasks associated with programming responsibilities.

Experience

Museum experience required, especially in producing and promoting exhibitions. Supervisory experience with a small staff with the capacity to cross-train when needed. Successful public speaking experience with a wide range of audiences, including children and adults. Teaching experience preferred.

 
Knowledge

Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the curriculum of the program; knowledge of general management, advisement, budgeting, and program planning principles; proficiency in the use of relevant computer programs and website content management.

 
Education

MA or MFA in art history, art, museum studies, or a related field. Terminal degree preferred.

 
Additional Requirements

Willing to work an active schedule, including attending openings and after-hours events some evenings and weekends, and available to travel as needed.
