Description

Performs professional level accounting and related work of moderate difficulty; prepares and maintains post-award grant accounting and compliance, grantor and departmental financial reporting, and manages billings and receivables for sponsored programs. Supports faculty and staff principal investigators and works closely with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research. Reports to the Manager of Accounting .

 
Examples

Performs grant related post-award functions, including budget and accounting transactions, grant billing and invoicing, financial reporting, and associated communication with faculty, staff, and others. Monitors program and department budgets of assigned grants; determines fund availability and eligibility for grant purchase and hires. 

Supports the Office of Sponsored Projects and Research with financial reporting and grant accounting for post-award grant administration. Reviews and prepares requests for journal voucher and budget entries; approves or enters adjustments into the accounting system.  Reconciles certain university accounts and assists other departments with reconciliations.  Runs control and exception reports and prepares correcting entries. Prepares grant and other financial reports and analysis for the Controller’s Office and Vice President of Administration and Finance as needed. 

Assists with compilation of the annual financial report for the University.  Prepares departmental financial reports as needed.  Works with the Controller, Manager of Accounting, and Information Technology on changes and/or upgrades to Banner Finance module, Banner Grant module, and other Banner integrated processes.  Performs other duties as assigned. Ability to cross train in accounting roles and may serve as backup to accounts payable, student accounting, or other accounting functions as needed.

Attends professional development trainings, workshops, or seminars on grants as directed in order to stay informed on current grant management, policies, and federal and state laws and regulations. Attend and participate in various meetings and committees and task force groups as requested. 

 
Physical Condition

Regular computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor use. Repetitive arm, hand, finger motions. Typical work environment includes working at a desk for long periods of time.

Experience

One to three years professional level accounting experience required. Background in fund accounting and prior State of Texas higher education experience is desirable. Banner ERP experience preferred.

 
Knowledge

Must have working knowledge of accepted accounting practices, legal statutes, department policies and procedures affecting financial records keeping. Additionally, should possess knowledge of basic general ledger accounting practices and procedures, fund accounting, State & Federal financial reporting requirements and guidelines. Should be able to reconcile financial or budget records and provide data accurately and in a timely manner. Must be skilled in oral and written communication methods, have great customer service skills, listening skills and be able to make and maintain interpersonal relations. Proficient in Microsoft Excel worksheets and use of Microsoft Word for correspondence.  

 
Education

Bachelor’s degree required, but preferred in accounting, finance, or related field. One to three years professional level accounting experience required.

 
Additional Requirements

Ability to work accurately with numerical detail, to perform accounting operations in an organized manner and analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data in clear and concise form. Ability to use computer to develop spreadsheets. Must have the ability to quickly learn the statewide accounting and reporting systems as well as grants accounting software. Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Familiarity with financial regulations and internal controls is a plus.
