Description

Performs professional accounting work. Responsible for ensuring accurate financial records by reconciling bank, state appropriations, and payroll accounts and identifying and resolving discrepancies. Assists students with payment plans, prepares student billings, and manages student receivables . Must possess strong analytical skills, excellent customer service skills, experience with accounting software, and the ability to work independently while adhering to strict deadlines. Works under the general supervision of the Manager of Accounting.

 
Examples

Prepares, analyzes, and corrects monthly State Appropriations, bank, and payroll reconciliations. Works alongside Business Office and Payroll staff to ensure that all transactions are accurately recorded and that discrepancies are resolved in a timely manner. Investigates and resolves discrepancies between the bank statements, state reports, and internal financial records. Verifies and independently confirms all investment transaction activity each month. Prepares reconciliation reports and assists in monthly/quarterly/year-end closings. May assist with the compilation of the Annual Financial Report and other schedules or reports as needed. Communicates directly with students, parents, staff and others in carrying out job duties.

Prepares student accounting entries, updates student and accounting records in Banner and State systems, and helps administer the Mustangs Reboot program. Responsible for establishing and tracking payment plans and partners with collection agencies to collect past due accounts.  Monitors and tracks outstanding account balances and coordinates payment arrangements.

Responsible for compliance with accounting standards, state and federal policies, as well as, university policies and procedures that are related to financial transactions, student accounting, and accounts receivable. Maintains accurate documentation to ensure that all reconciliations have appropriate support.  Identifies areas for improvement in reconciliation and billing processes and assists in implementing new procedures to improve efficiencies and accuracy.  Assists with audits and reviews of accounts receivable and banking transactions. Performs other duties as assigned. 

 
Physical Condition

Regular computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor use. Repetitive arm, hand, finger motions. Typical work environment includes working at a desk for long periods of time.

Experience

Requires one or more years accounting experience. Background in fund accounting and prior State of Texas higher education experience is desirable. 

 
Knowledge

Must have working knowledge of accepted accounting practices, legal statutes, department policies, and procedures affecting financial records keeping. Some knowledge of cost and audit accounting. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel worksheets and use of Microsoft Word for correspondence. Must be able to operate 10-key calculator by touch.

 
Education

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in accounting or related field.

 
Additional Requirements

Ability to work accurately with numerical detail, to perform accounting operations in an organized manner and analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data in clear and concise form. Ability to use computer to develop spreadsheets. Must have the ability to quickly learn the Statewide accounting and reporting systems. Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Familiarity with financial regulations and internal controls is a plus.
