Title
Librarian, Digital Services
Description

Collaborates in managing the library website, discovery systems, and other specialized technologies to ensure seamless access and enhance the user experience of the library’s online services. This position provides comprehensive support, including first-line technical assistance and day-to-day administration, for all aspects of library systems, software, and technology. Contributes to technology planning, assessment, and project implementation. Reports to the Associate University Librarian for Technical Services.

Examples


-         Systems Administration:

Manage and troubleshoot the library's integrated library system (ILS) and discovery service. Administer online databases, ensuring seamless access by resolving connectivity issues (e.g., authentication, subscription platform changes, IP/network issues). Serve as the primary library liaison with the campus IT department.

-         Web Services:

Maintain and update the library website, ensuring adherence to web accessibility standards and usability best practices. Manage content management systems (CMS) and digital asset management systems such as LibGuides and CONTENTdm.

-         Technology Planning and Implementation:

Assess library technologies and web services to recommend improvements. Assist in selecting and implementing new technology applications. Provide training on library systems and emerging technologies.

-         Collaboration and Support:

Work with vendors, IT staff, and library colleagues to resolve technical issues. Provide effective user support services including consulting, training, and documentation. Provide reference assistance, including weekend shifts on a rotating schedule. Serve on library and university committees as assigned

-         Professional Development:

Maintain knowledge of current library and web technologies, standards, and best practices. Stay informed about trends in library systems, digital resources, and accessibility.

Experience

Experience in an academic or research library preferred. Experience with website design, including HTML, CSS, and other web programming languages. Experience with resource discovery systems and library management systems preferred. Experience working with outside parties such as vendors and the university IT department. Demonstrated ability to work with people with varying levels of computer skills and to make library technology and online services understandable to the campus community.

Knowledge

Knowledge of current web technologies and best practices, including web accessibility standards. Basic knowledge of library cataloging and metadata, including familiarity with Library of Congress classification. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and the ability to manage CMS-driven websites. Working knowledge of digital asset management systems such as CONTENTdm and other library technologies such as online research databases, EZproxy, ILL software, and the Springshare platform (e.g., LibGuides, LibAnswers, LibWizard, and LibCal). Familiarity with web scripting languages, analytics tools, statistical analysis, and API integration is a plus.

Education

Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program preferred. A master’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related technical discipline is also acceptable. A combination of relevant education and experience considered.

Additional Requirements

Demonstrated interpersonal communication, problem-solving, organizational, time management, and analytical skills. Must have the ability to be flexible with job responsibilities and exercise sound judgement. Self-directed and self-motivated learner with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a changing environment. Requires some general reference desk service, including occasional weekend/evening hours on a rotating schedule.

Requires the ability to maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
