- Description
The Access Services Specialist is responsible for managing the organization of materials within the library. They oversee the arrangement of collections according to established classification systems, ensuring items are easily accessible for patrons. Furthermore, they provide support to various library departments and assist patrons with locating library resources and accessing online library services. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Technical Services.
- Examples
· Manage the organization and accurate labeling of the library stacks in adherence with Library of Congress or other designated classification. Routinely shelve new, donated, and returned items and perform shelf reading to verify the correct placement of materials. Scan items that are out of place or in the interior book drops for in-house use and return them to their designated locations. Retrieve items from the exterior book returns and deliver them to the circulation desk for processing. Monitor the condition of materials and identify any items requiring new labels or repairs. Retrieve patron hold requests for the circulation desk and re-shelve holds that have not been picked up. Facilitate the shifting or relocation of materials to accommodate growth or changes in the library's holdings. Assist with inventory projects to verify the accuracy of the library's holding records and identify discrepancies or missing items. Assist the Collection Development Librarian with the identification and removal of outdated, damaged, or duplicate materials through regular weeding projects and collection assessment. Collaborate with Technical Services staff to maintain accurate records of library holdings, including updating cataloging information. Utilize the reports provided by the library system to conduct thorough searches for lost or missing items. Maintain the organization of the media storage room and the CD/DVD shelves display shelves on the 1st floor. Assist with various library electronics, such as the presentation equipment in the atrium and the public scanners. Coordinate with the IT department to manage equipment upgrades and repairs as required. Organize returned DVDs and CDs by filing them appropriately and replacing damaged cases or labels. Oversee a significant media weeding initiative to remove outdated, poor condition, and unused materials. Assist with locating materials by utilizing the library catalog and guiding patrons to the corresponding items within the stacks. Provide information on how to navigate the library's online resources, including databases, electronic journals, research guides, and digital repositories. Offer basic technical support, including assistance with wireless network issues, accessing library resources remotely, and troubleshooting login problems for library accounts and other services. Refer patrons to the Instruction Librarians or other appropriate departments for more in-depth assistance when necessary. Serve as the primary backup for the interlibrary loan department and provide backup coverage for the circulation desk as needed. Assist with generating monthly reports summarizing circulation statistics, collection usage, and other relevant metrics. Assist with compiling usage statistics for the library's databases and other online resources. Monitor the library's online chat platform and respond promptly and accurately to patron questions. Manage student workers, including hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating performance. Stay up to date on trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in access services and related areas through professional development activities, training sessions, and conferences. Contribute to library meetings and committees by sharing insights, providing feedback, and collaborating with colleagues to enhance library services and operations. Perform other duties as assigned by library management.

- Experience
Library experience is desirable. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to provide exemplary customer service. Demonstrated organizational, analytical, time management, and problem-solving skills. Experience with word-processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Knowledge
Knowledge of library materials and bibliographic tools. Familiarity with library policies. Understanding of integrated library systems.
- Education
Bachelor's degree preferred. One year of college or research library experience (12 hours of applicable Library Science credit from an ALA accredited library school may be substituted for one year of academic library experience).
