Title
Assistant Director, Disability Support Services
Description

The Assistant Director of Disability Support Sevices assists the Director of Counseling Center and Disability Support Services in managing the department. The Assistant Director is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive services to support the needs of students with disabilities requesting services and accommodations covered under the Americans with Disability Act, and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. Responsible for evaluation and documentation, coordination of appropriate services, academic testing accommodations, student training on the use of adaptive equipment, program activities, daily office operations, and supervision of student assistants. Reports to the Director of Counseling Center and Disability Support Services. 

Examples

The Assistant Director will provide the appropriate accommodations, auxiliary aids, and student services on a case-by-case basis. This position will advise students with disabilities, review documentation, develop reasonable accommodations in consultation with the Director, and coordinate the delivery of access services to students.

The Assistant Director will support assistive technology and alternative testing needs such as proctoring exams. The position should be familiar in assistive technology, technology accessibility standards, relevant MSU and Texas Tech University System policy, and applicable federal and state law. The position provides support to students by evaluating technological requirements and providing interventions and solutions for accessing course information, technologies, and resources. The Assistant Director will assist the Director with overseeing part-time employees, sign language interpreters, CART transcribers, readers, scribes, note takers, work-study students, student employees, and other personnel required to implement student accommodation plans.

Physical Condition
Experience

At least three years of professional experience in higher education disability services. Experience with student or employee accommodations for persons with disabilities in an education environment. Experience with disability law, including Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and experience applying this understanding in a college context. Experience with Accessible Information Management (AIM) software or similar software. Experience in reviewing medical, psychological, educational, and other appropriate documentation to determine student's eligibility for accommodations. 

Knowledge

Knowledge of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Experience in evaluating and determining ESA requests, Residence Life and Housing, and dining Accommodations. 

Education

Bachelor’s degree in social/behavior science, vocational rehabilitation, special education, or a related field or equivalent work experience in higher education in disability services. Masters strongly preferred, and three-year work experience in higher education in disability services. 

Additional Requirements

This position has a flexible work schedule, which includes some evenings and weekends. Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and maintain effective working relationships with students, administrators, and employees are required.
