- Description
Responsible for leading and directing a comprehensive career planning and development program at MSU Texas, with the goal to support and prepare students in making informed decisions regarding undergraduate and post-graduate career plans through resources and opportunities which foster advancement and exploration. Reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.
- Examples
Provides strategic direction, visionary leadership, supervision, and staff development. In collaboration with staff, determines annual and ongoing priorities for department, working diligently to bring these priorities to fruition. Identifies student needs for information and support on career planning, employment, and graduate/professional preparation. Creates programs, services, and resources to meet those needs in collaboration with staff and stakeholders. Establishes and implements departmental policies. Prepares the annual operating budget for the department and monitors fiscal activity. Advises students and student organizations on career planning issues. Develops and delivers trainings, presentations, workshops, and career-related seminars to university stakeholders. Represents the university in various professional capacities with local constituencies as a spokesperson for undergraduate career planning at the university. Addresses alumni groups, parents, faculty, student organizations, and other administrators on career-related issues. Makes concerted effort to cultivate new partnerships with on and off-campus partners including faculty, staff, administrators, parents, alumni, and employers. Implements an effective marketing approach and compiles career-related statistical information utilized in annual reporting, strategic planning, and various accreditation efforts. Oversees and maintains the departmental website, career services publications and related printed or digital resources, and job posting platform. Serves on university committees. Adheres to the ethical standards set forth by the appropriate professional organization(s). Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Physical Condition
Mild physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over thirty pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, stoop, bend, and reach overhead. Sufficient strength, stamina, and mobility to perform tasks associated with programming and outreach responsibilities of the position.
- Experience
Minimum of three years of professional, progressive, supervisory experience in career services, employment counseling, or training and development, preferably in a college or university setting.
- Knowledge
Must have knowledge of planning and implementing training and development programs for a college career services unit, including an understanding of labor markets, job trends, career development skills and advising techniques, and nature of a liberal arts education. Knowledge of accepted office practices and procedures, budget management, and the role of technology in the delivery of career services. An understanding of the principles of college student development and the policies and structure of a four-year, public university is preferred. Must be proficient in the use of a personal computer, including commonly used office software such as Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel, as well as career and professional development software programs.
- Education
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in a relevant discipline preferred (e.g. education, counseling, human resources, training and development, business leadership, etc).
- Additional Requirements
Must have highly developed written and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal, networking, and public speaking skills. Must demonstrate dependability, creativity, good judgment, professionalism, and dedication to sound principles of student development. Must have the presence and poise necessary to interact effectively with executive level management.
