Title
Central Plant Superintendent
Description

Performs responsible supervisory and technical work directing the operation and maintenance activities of the campus power plant, HVAC department, and plumbing department to ensure a comfortable, safe, and healthy environment is maintained. Assists in review and provides inspection of mechanical systems for construction projects for plumbing code compliance. Responsible for annual inspections and repairs to elevators, gas systems, and plumbing systems. Responsible for asbestos abatement and compliance with laws regarding asbestos documentation for all Facilities Services personnel, including organization of its yearly training. Responsible for maintaining fire alarm systems, security alarms, and HVAC controls for the campus with assistance from the Manager of Facilities Information and University Health/Safety.

Examples

Inspects and supervises plant operations. Plans and schedules projects, preventative maintenance, and routine and emergency repairs of campus systems. Maintains detailed instructions for the operation of chillers, compressors, boilers, pumps and other equipment. Collects and reports data to facilities administrators for tracking purposes. Hires, trains, and supervises central plant employees engaged in operating and making repairs to all utility systems such as steam, chill water, water treatment, controls, HVAC, and plumbing. Supervises plumbing department in maintaining potable water system and sanitary sewer system. Works with limited supervision and with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Services.

Physical Condition

Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing fifty pounds or more.

Experience

Must have five or more years' experience in power plant operations with strong background in plumbing as well as mechanical knowledge of equipment in power plant, buildings, and campus. Should have responsible supervisory experience in the operation and maintenance of a steam and refrigeration plant.

Knowledge

Must have knowledge of the technical principles and approved methods and practices involved in the operation and maintenance of steam heating and refrigeration plants and plumbing requirements for the campus. Thorough knowledge of the hazards and approved safety requirements and practices in such plants. Experience in backhoe operation beneficial. Computer and technical knowledge appropriate to the position including a good working knowledge of Microsoft products Outlook, Word, and Excel. Master Plumbing License highly preferred, but not required; willing to obtain license within a year of employment. Excellent customer service skills a necessity.

Education

Graduation from an accredited high school, including or supplemented by vocational training or other special training related to the field of work.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Requires non-traditional, on-call status. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Requires employment physical exam. *A valid Texas driver's license is required. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
