Title
Library Catalog Specialist
Description

The Catalog Specialist assists with cataloging and acquisitions functions, physical processing, and maintenance of all collections at Moffett Library. Responsible for performing original and copy cataloging based on current standards, maintenance, and authority control. May supervise one or more student assistants. Reports to the Associate University Librarian for Technical Services.  

Examples

Cataloging and classification of all library materials in various formats including electronic resources, monographs, media, maps, manuscripts, and theses. Uses the integrated library management system for importing and managing enhanced records in the library catalog. Maintains and applies a thorough working knowledge of current cataloging rules and changes. Verifies, produces, and applies labels, stamps, covers, barcodes, etc. to materials, or supervises their application. Assists with one-time and recurring collection and stacks maintenance projects such as weeding, collection inventory, resolving problems with library items, and metadata cleanup and improvement initiatives. Maintains departmental statistics. Trains and provides daily direction to student workers in the department, as needed. Serves on library and university committees, elected, and assigned. Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective operation of Moffett Library. Work is performed independently and under general supervision.

Experience

Library experience is desirable. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated organizational, analytical, time management, and problem-solving skills. Experience with word-processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Knowledge

Familiarity with cataloging standards such as AACR2, MARC, LCSH, and LC classification preferred, as well as current cataloging rules, practices, and procedures. Understanding of integrated library systems. Team-based, cooperative cataloging experience highly desirable.

Education

Bachelor's degree preferred. One year of college or research library experience (12 hours of applicable Library Science credit from an ALA accredited library school may be substituted for one year of academic library experience).
