Groundskeeper, Lead
Description

Perform a variety of general maintenance work responsibilities to contribute to the upkeep, care and beauty of the university campus. This is accomplished by maintaining the appearance and safety of the grounds, cleaning in and around all buildings and areas, ensuring the readiness for play of the athletic fields, maintaining the safe and efficient operation of equipment, and completing related work as assigned. 


Maintains the appearance and safety of the grounds by mowing the grass to its proper height; trimming and edging around the walks, flower beds, walls, buildings or specified areas, removing weeds, leaves and debris, pruning shrubs and trees, watering lawns, trees, shrubs, and flower beds, and planting grass, flowers, trees and shrubs. Removes litter, broken glass, and empties trash barrels. Work involves responsibility for the appearance and general care of grounds, gardens, walks, roads, parking lots and the maintenance and care of tools, supplies and equipment. May use motorized, heavy-duty equipment such as trucks, tractors, packers, mowers, edger's, and chainsaws. May be asked to assist other trades in the Facilities Services department.


Work is performed under general supervision. Reports directly to a grounds-foreperson, and under the general supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Superintendent. Acts as a crew leader in the absence of the foreman.  

Examples

Participates in work on grounds, such as mowing grass, trimming shrubs, spraying plants, replacing dead plants, watering plants, hauling dirt and fertilizer, and keeping grounds clean. Work as a member of team in seeding, planting, and installing sod, trimming trees and shrubbery, and grading, weeding, mowing, and raking lawns. Must lay out football, baseball, and two soccer fields. During inclement weather, performs work involving the removal of snow, ice, leaves, fallen branches, and other weather-generated debris from all campus grounds. 


Moderate to heavy lifting required. Must be able to use motorized, heavy-duty equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, backhoe diggers, edger, and chainsaws to perform grounds maintenance work. Assists foreperson on duty as necessary and when one or more forepersons are absent.  

Physical Condition

Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds. Must be able to work while squatting as well as be able to bend and pull. Must be able to reach approximately 30 inches in all directions. Requires employment physical exam.

Experience

Experience as a laborer, farmer, gardener, florist helper, groundskeeper, or similar work in involving general laborer duties which may include the planting and maintenance of vegetation, landscaping duties nursery inspections, equivalent to a Groundskeeper. Experience with hand held power tools and equipment used in landscaping and grounds work.

Knowledge

Basic knowledge of soil and turf management.  Knowledge of safety regulations related to power equipment. Knowledge of methods, materials, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment used in various grounds maintenance activities including mowing, edging, trimming, and weed and pest control. Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and minor repair of power lawn mowers. Ability to understand and follow verbal directions, plans, sketches and drawings.  

Education

High school diploma or GED.  

Additional Requirements

Must have valid driver's license.
