Title
Desktop Designer
Description

Uses both Macintosh and PC computers with design software for page layout, illustration and photo manipulation for pre-press production and finishing. Formats and combines text with photographs and other visual graphic elements to produce publication ready materials for printing. Translates imports and incorporates electronic files directly into the document and manipulates images and text. Converts and scans photographs, drawings and logos into digital images. Enhances digital images by adjusting tones and resolution. Saves and exports images to appropriate file formats. Transmits pages to color separations, halftones, and line art for production either to film, plate or other traditional forms. Performs bindery and finishing work. Operates copy machines. Maintains financial records. Purchases paper and materials. Provides customer service, sales and invoicing. Reports directly to the Print Shop Supervisor.

Examples

Responsible for maintaining layout and university branding standards for products such business cards, nametags calendars, flyers, handbooks, letterhead, office forms, postcards, posters, programs, tickets, and other printed materials. Additional production work may include stitching, folding, collating, and other bindery and finishing.

Physical Condition

Good manual dexterity and ability to pay attention to detail with emphasis on short deadlines and tight work schedules along with good visual acuity, depth perception, field of view and ability to focus quickly.

Experience

Two years experience and training using Macintosh and PC computers and related design software for layout, illustration, and photo manipulation, with emphasis on designing publication ready material ready for print as well as general office skills to include customer service.

Knowledge

Knowledge and understanding of a wide variety of printing/duplicating equipment. Knowledge of general office skills and procedures.

Education

Graduation from high school or equivalent

Requires a good sense of creativity and balancing of elements and the ability to produce a well-designed project. Must be able to consult with customers to define requirements and offer solutions and techniques in order to create and produce a product that reflects well upon the university.
