Title
Custodian, Lead Housing
Description

The Housing Custodial Lead is responsible for ensuring that resident properties remain clean, safe, and attractive by performing the full scope of cleaning work in common interior and exterior areas up to MSU standards.  Performs routine custodial work to maintain cleanliness of assigned area or building(s). Work involves cleaning and caring for dorms and apartments and surrounding premises; maintaining custodial tools and equipment; requesting supplies; performing minor building and equipment repairs and other related duties. Works under moderate supervision and attends daily morning meetings to communicate what the needs are for the day/week. Instructions are received in oral or written form and work is periodically inspected by the Custodial Foreperson for conformance with established standards of building care and maintenance.  Acts as an assistant to the Custodial Foreperson during end of the semester dorm room/apartment turnovers and as the Foreperson when the Foreperson is absent from work.  May occasionally be assigned to relieve the Custodial Foreperson of cleaning assignments.  Reports directly to the Custodial Foreperson under the general supervision of the Manager, Custodial & Residence Life Maintenance.

Examples

Performs custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, operating buffers, restroom cleaning machine, ride-on vacuums, ride-on carpet extractors and ride-on floor scrubbers.  Performs restroom and bathroom maintenance and cleaning, replenishing supplies and applying cleaning chemicals. Performs carpet maintenance, cleans office furniture, walls, and windows, air-conditioning vents, ceiling fans and empties trash. Actively participate in demanding apartment/dorm room cleaning turnarounds during December and summer months.  May be assigned to facilitate set-up and take-down for special events, move and set up furniture, and deliver supplies. Work off ladders or step stools as necessary.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

Must be able to perform constant, intense physical labor; regularly move & use equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty pounds such as washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and other furniture as necessary to clean.  Must be able to perform duties requiring push/pull activity, hand/finger coordination, constant repetitive motion of wrist, arm & shoulder; reach, climb, balance, crouch, twist, crawl, & kneel; work with chemicals, dust, fumes and odors associated with custodial work. Must be able to wear safety and protective equipment as needed.

Experience

Should have experience in custodial or general cleaning work.

Knowledge

Must know the modern methods of cleaning rest rooms, bathrooms, break rooms and kitchens and large living areas. Must have a working knowledge of cleaning supplies and custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners; both low & high speed buffers, carpet extractors, have general knowledge of carpet maintenance and care; and must have knowledge of custodial chemicals and their application. Willingness to learn how to operate battery powered walk-behind and ride-on equipment to include floor scrubbers, carpet extractors/vacuums and restroom cleaning machines.

Education

Requires education sufficient to receive and follow oral and written directives, as well as follow instructions in the mixing and use of chemicals and the operation of power equipment.

Additional Requirements

Ability to work unsupervised. Must be able to understand hazardous materials handling (SDS sheets) and be able to maintain cleaning supplies inventory. *Required to work on move-in weekends and some evenings when needed. *Requires employment physical exam. *A valid Texas driver's license is required.
