Title
Assistant Vice President, Student Affairs
Description

The Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs (AVPSA) collaborates with student life and other university partners to develop and provide programs and services, open to all, aimed at enhancing the academic, social, emotional, and overall success of MSU Texas students. The AVPSA serves as a university advocate championing community, belonging and engagement across campus. In addition, the AVPSA leads efforts to constantly improve student services and student support efforts through evidence-based strategies and effective assessment. A key responsibility for this position is to oversee and cultivate a strategic vision for Mosaic, Office of Student Leadership and Involvement (OSLI), FIRST2GO programs, and the Charlye O. Farris Social Justice Resource Center (SJRC) and to lead the implementation of strategies to achieve that vision in partnership with campus constituencies. The AVPSA reports directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs. 

Examples

Serves as a visible and highly interactive leader when working with each campus community to establish trust amongst stakeholders and implement best practices across the University. Ensures that trust is established between our departments and key stakeholders and avenues of communication remain open, honest, and promote the creation of formal and informal partnerships. Works with underrepresented and affected student populations in higher education, including military-connected, first-generation, low socioeconomic, and parenting students (ACE groups). Advances community, belonging and engagement through successful strategies and initiatives and the use of data and research to inform strategic analysis, assessment and measurement of effective programs. Formulates and assesses immediate and long-range plans for the FIRST2GO, OSLI, SJRC and MOSAIC departments. Oversees marketing campaigns and the publication and distribution of promotional materials using printed and digital media. Utilizes existing retention platforms to identify and assist underserved and/or at risk students in need of support or intervention. Leads the development of work plans, budgets and proposals for departmental projects and initiatives, managing project timelines, tasks and deliverables; manages departmental policy and personnel. Convenes first-generation and/or other advisory committees to guide departmental decisions and identify needed resources, activities or opportunities for FIRST2GO, MOSAIC or other campus Departments. Makes related recommendations to campus administration and key stakeholders. Supervises professional and student staff, along with volunteers and student leaders. Participates in NASPA, particularly in FGEN focused activities. Provides consultation to the campus on FGEN issues. Cooperates in the support of campus events sponsored by other student services departments, and serve on University committees, as assigned.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience

Must possess direct and sustained experience with leadership development training, group facilitation, assessment and program evaluation, student learning, student and staff development, student conduct and due process, developing and applying University policies, and ability to effectively supervise staff. Must have strong communication and organizational skills. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, University staff, students and the public. Must have creative and artistic abilities and skill in planning and effectively managing multiple projects to completion. Must be proficient in the use of digital tools, resources, and technologies for the advancement of student learning and professional performance. Leadership and enthusiasm a must. 

Knowledge

Knowledge of student development theory, identity development, strategic planning, social media use, Title IX, VAWA, Clery, and federal legislation impacting campus climate. Skill in decision making and proficiency in both oral and written interpersonal communication is desired. Ability to work in a team environment while maintaining positive professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and the local community.

Education

Master's degree in related field required; earned doctorate preferred.

Additional Requirements

Must have exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively communicate, both written and oral, with various audiences. Must understand technology as related to communicating with students.
