Title
Assistant Director, Counseling Center
Description

The Assistant Director is responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive services to meet the mental health needs of MSU students.  The Assistant Director assists the Director in managing the Counseling Center.  Tasks are both administrative and clinical.  Reports to the Director of the Counseling Center. 

Examples

Provides individual therapy, group therapy, referral services, case management and crisis intervention to students to address psychological and mental health concerns and to support their academic success; Supervision of graduate level practicum students seeking a degree in psychology or counseling; Participates in meetings, committees and community service and university activities; Provides consultation and outreach to staff, faculty, students, parents and campus departments concerning students’ developmental and mental health concerns; Establishes and maintains positive and close working relationships with diverse and varied entities;  Participates in the training and supervision of graduate practicum students; Develops and delivers outreach plans on topics such as suicide prevention, consent, depression and anxiety and other mental health concerns;  Assists the Director in administrative functions such as strategic planning, policy and procedure development, data management, report writing, assessment, supervision and staff development;   Serves as a representative of the Counseling Center to the campus community and to the community at large;  Provides clinical training and supervision of graduate interns.  Duties may be completed face to face or virtually depending on need.  Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Physical Condition

Ability to sit during therapy sessions and meetings; ability to stand when giving presentations; ability to carry some supplies for outreach events to the outreach location. 

Experience

At least three years experience in a clinical setting providing evaluations, assessments, clinical supervision, outreach, therapy and some administrative functions, preferably in a higher education setting.

Demonstrated proficiency in therapy, assessment, and clinical supervision; and knowledge and experience working with diverse populations.  Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations, respect for developmental processes of college students, and a history of providing advocacy for those with psychological, emotional and mental health issues.  Demonstrated proficiency in delivery of virtual services. 

 

 

 

 

Knowledge

Extensive knowledge of counseling, student development and diverse populations.  Knowledge of how to deliver services in a virtual format.   Knowledge of university policies, community and campus services and resources is desirable. 

Education

Master’s degree in counseling or psychology; terminal degree preferred. Appropriate coursework and supervised training in human development, psychopathology, career counseling, theories and techniques, treatment planning and ethics. Texas licensure as a licensed professional counselor or psychologist. 

Additional Requirements

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required. Proficiency with technological services currently used in virtual delivery of services.  Must be detail oriented and have excellent interpersonal, customer service, organization and planning, prioritization, problem solving, follow through, time management, and oral and written communication skills.  Also, must be flexible and possess the ability to successfully handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment.

 

Position requires occasional evening and/or weekend work to meet operational needs and requirements of the position, especially in support of campus outreach programs and/or emergency response protocols.   Occasional travel is required.  Position requires performance of other mission-specific duties contingent upon student, university and operational needs.  Regular, reliable attendance is required.  This position is designated as security sensitive (mod) and requires a criminal background check.
