Title
Research Administrator
Description

The Research Administrator of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research manages pre-award activities for MSU's portfolio of grants using knowledge of grant management rules and regulations, technical expertise, and analytical skills. This position reports to the Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research.

Examples

Manages the day-to-day operations and objectives in support of the grants portfolio. Identifies grant opportunities consistent with MSU's mission and faculty expertise. Pre-award activities include, but are not limited to, assisting departmental faculty/Principal Investigators (PIs) in the development, preparation, and submission of grant proposals. Ensures all applications meet agency and university guidelines and published timetables and deadlines. Ensures proposals are routed in a timely manner for further review. Assists the PI in the development of budgets and budget justification including proofing the budget for inconsistencies and ensuring accuracy. Reviews budgets for consistency with sponsor, monitors compliance with agency and University regulations regarding submission; verifies all financial information to include application of the appropriate overhead rate for the project. Advises the PI on administrative requirements in preparing proposal submissions. Advises PI on budget adjustments and revisions necessary to meet the sponsor requirements. Coordinates and reviews certain proposal elements (biosketches and facilities & resources) for consistency, accuracy, and completeness. Reviews proposals for consistency with sponsor guidelines on budget, format, font size, page limits excluding narrative content (obtain and review sponsor guidelines). Monitors and facilitates proposal process through the routing process in compliance with University procedures and institutional signatures. Obtains signatures as needed. Monitors proposal status and advises PI on requirements and deadlines associated with research protection protocols. Works effectively with other offices on research proposals. Collaborates with Budget Office on reports and transition from pre-award to post-award management. Prepares high-quality written documents. Analyzes data and formulates conclusions. Performs related responsibilities as required.

Physical Condition

Sufficient dexterity, agility, and physical condition to perform routine office tasks.

Experience

Three years of work-related grants and contracts experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Previous university experience preferred.

Knowledge

Must be able to work independently on difficult or complex assignments, to understand and interpret pertinent policies and procedures clearly and accurately, and to establish and maintain effective working relations with administrators, faculty, staff, funding agencies, and other stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. . Proficiency with MS Office Suite software required.

Education

Master's degree or equivalent is required.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community.Must maintain the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research website through the content management interface, and work effectively with Internet-based systems such as grants.gov and FastLane. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
