Title
Postal Clerk
Description

Routine and repetitive clerical work involving the collection, sorting, and distribution of intra-campus mail and incoming and outgoing U.S. mail to university departments and resident students. Work involves coverage of all campus mail collection and distribution points on a regular schedule. Responsible for the prompt pickup and delivery of mail and for safeguarding mail in their possession. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Reports to the Postal Services Supervisor.

Examples

Collects outgoing U.S. mail and campus mail from university offices, and carries it to the campus mail room. Sorts U.S. and campus mail. Delivers campus mail to various distribution points. Assists with the preparation and dispatch of third-class bulk mail. Drives a motor vehicle on campus mail route.

Physical Condition

Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over 50 pounds. Sufficient stamina to walk distances strength to lift and carry mail bags and packages, and ability stand for long periods of time, stoop, bend and reach overhead. *Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.

Experience

Requires general clerical or transferable experience with an emphasis on customer service, computer, and record-keeping skills.

Knowledge

Working knowledge of postal practices. Must understand or be able to learn about postal guidelines and postage rates. Ability to learn and recall locations corresponding to university departments and mail distribution points. Must be to operate a motor vehicle and possess a clean driving record.

Education

High School Graduate or equivalent required. Requires education sufficient to receive and follow oral and written directives, follow instructions, and operate equipment.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations, and to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must possess good oral and written communication skills and be able to read and write legibly. Ability to remember names, titles, and locations of departments, faculty, staff, and changes in personnel. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Requires a valid Texas Driver's License. *Requires an employment physical. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
