Title
Assistant Director, Athletics for Athletic Communication
Description

Responsible for management and supervision of the sports information office, to include public relations and publicity functions, game day operations, update and maintenance of statistical information, production of media guides and game programs. Coordinates editorial content of the athletic website. Oversees the budget and content of the MSU Video Streaming component of the website. Liaison to Mass Communication for staffing and educational coordination. Reports to the Director of Athletics.

Examples

Attends all athletic events as feasible. Establishes and maintains good working relationships with appropriate local, state and national media representatives. Hires and supervises scorekeepers and statisticians for all home athletic events. Handles all requests for media credentials and coordinates and assigns seating for all media representatives at home athletic events. Maintains statistical records for all sports. Prepares reports required by conferences or national athletic associations of which the university may be a member. Writes and designs all media guides, game programs and recruiting materials for individual sports. Handles all requests from the media for interviews, photographs, information, etc. Prepares sports releases for distribution to the media. Writes and publishes a booster club newsletter. Maintains distribution lists for all media outlets. Serves as liaison between the Department of Athletics and the Alumni Relations Office. Attends local, regional, conference and national meetings as required. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

Must have the ability to climb stairs in order to gain access to bleachers, press boxes, etc.

Experience

Three to five years experience in sports information, media relations, print or electronic journalism, and/or sports reporting. Heavy emphasis on writing skills and experience. Experience with still photography helpful, especially sports photography.

Knowledge

Heavy emphasis on writing and oral communication skills. Working knowledge of publication design and computerized statistical compilation recommended. Must possess excellent organizational, problem-solving, and management skills. PC skills required, preferably with sports-statistic and/or desktop publishing software. Must be able to type proficiently.

Education

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in mass communications or journalism.

Additional Requirements

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Excellent writing skills with the ability to work under pressure and strict deadlines. Excellent oral communications and public relations skills. Attention to detail required. *Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.  *Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed. *Regular reliable attendance is required. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is considered security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
