Title
Telecommunications Technician
Description

Performs telecommunications support work in the maintenance of system components for voice and video telecommunications networks. Work involves using telecommunications voice systems and cabling plan of the agency; performing diagnosis and resolution of voice telecommunications problems; working on telecommunications projects and installations. Works under limited supervision and uses initiative and independent judgment to complete work orders. Implements and maintains telecommunications capabilities and services as required to meet the needs of the expanding university environment. Represents MSU in dealing with telecommunications companies, industry associations and state and federal government agencies on telecommunications matters. Works under the general direction of the PC/Network Services Manager.

Examples

Assists with maintaining telecommunications equipment and cabling, including: investigating and resolving problems related to telecommunications equipment and cabling, replacing jacks, and testing. Evaluates and reports on system errors. Coordinates with vendors and service providers to resolve routine problems with telecommunications equipment. Consults with users to gather information needed to determine requirements for station equipment moves, additions, and changes. Supports voice services users by processing moves, additions and changes to telecommunications station equipment. Assists in the repair or installation of telecommunications equipment and cabling. Conducts application research studies as appropriate to identify new methods, techniques and equipment to enhance the operation of existing systems and networks. Directs and conducts traffic analysis studies of long distance usage to determine and implement the most cost effective rates. Audits accuracy of telecommunications bills to insure payments are appropriate for equipment provided and services rendered. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

Ability to lift 50 lbs. Requires physical strength, stamina, and agility for moving heavy furniture, climbing ladders and stairs, and working long hours to complete jobs on time. Endurance for walking and working in excessive heat for extended periods of time in tunnel system and outside in summer is necessary. Sitting and standing for long periods of time required. Must have good manual dexterity for wiring. Must be able to read blue prints. Sufficient ability to perform a variety of manual tasks associated with duties.

Experience

Five or more years full-time experience maintaining and operating voice telecommunications equipment.

Knowledge

Working knowledge of telecommunications utilities operations; working knowledge of digital switching systems for voice and data; working knowledge of traffic analysis and network management techniques. Working knowledge of Voice over IP. Knowledge of terminology, including DSUs, T1 circuits, modems. Considerable knowledge of telecommunications and network equipment and working skills in using a computer.

Education

High School graduation or equivalent

Must be well organized and capable of meeting frequent and/or multiple deadlines. Required to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and manage conflicting priorities and demands. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide constituency. Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers, staff and external contacts, and to work effectively in a professional team environment. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position requires an employment physical exam. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is designated as security sensitive (high) and requires a criminal background check.
