Title
Database Administrator
Description

The Oracle DBA (DBA) role is to support existing Oracle databases. Duties to include performing database maintenance, technical support, supporting on-going application development, installation and upgrades of Oracle and applications. Works closely with functional end users to support implemented Oracle applications, development tools, reporting tools, and other third-party solutions. Reports to the Administrative Systems Manager and offers mentorship to the programing team.

Examples

Analyzes problems outlined by management or systems analysts in terms of detailed equipment requirements and capabilities. Works with customers, Programmers and DBAs to determine proper flow of information and better resolve the issues. Heavy use of SQL Programming required; responsible for transactional statements against the database and the maintenance / creation of custom database objects. Prepares detailed analyses, plans, diagrams, and verification procedures for existing and proposed computer applications. Assists in development and testing of automated systems. Assists in evaluating data processing equipment and techniques for applicability, reliability, flexibility, speed, and costs. May verify program logic by preparing and using test data. Sets user privileges within the database environment. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

Ability to lift 25 lbs. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Ability to travel long distances.

Experience

Seven or more years of experience in SQL reporting and PL/SQL Development; time in higher education is a bonus. One or more years Oracle Database Administrator experience and / or experience configuring and maintaining highly scalable environments. 

Knowledge

Knowledge of current Oracle version(s); tuning and troubleshooting Oracle instances; building databases in different environments and Installing Oracle on Windows/Linux/UNIX. Knowledge of writing and optimizing code in PL/SQL. Knowledge in Oracle Backup/Recovery (RMAN) methodologies and strategies. UNIX Administration knowledge. Knowledge of client/server-based systems and ability to maintain software. Knowledge of Oracle database administration or current software programs deployed at MSU is desirable. Experience with Ellucian's Banner products for higher education, desirable.

Education

College course work in Programming as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:

60 Semester hours or Associate’s Degree equals one year

90-120 Semester Hours or Bachelor’s Degree equals 2 years

MA/MS would equal 4 years

Additional Requirements

Must have high degree of aptitude for problem solving and communicating with end user. Requires skill in recognizing, analyzing, and providing solutions to difficult ADP problems. Ability to maintain software. Ability to perform detailed work accurately and to work effectively with others.
