Title
Director, Counseling Center
Description

Responsible for administration and coordination of programs and services provided by the Counseling Center. Supervises the clinical activities of professional staff and graduate trainees; develops and implements the policies and procedures of the Center. Provides direct clinical services to students including psychological, career, and academic counseling, testing and assessment, emergency/crisis on-call services, evaluation, and documentation. Reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students.

Examples

Coordinates and supervises the selection, training, and evaluation of professional staff, support staff, and graduate trainees. Develops and implements policies and procedures of the Counseling Center. Responsible for clinical record keeping. Evaluates the efficiency of clinical and other direct services provided to students; evaluates agency productivity and quality data; and prepares and submits monthly and annual reports. Prepares and administers budget. Provides individual and group counseling and career testing and assessment. Participates in the training and supervision of graduate practicum students.  Provides consultation, workshops, and seminars to students, staff, faculty, and the community regarding student mental health, legalities, policies, procedures, and referrals. Develops and coordinates programming, presentations, workshops, and clinical activities of counselors. Serves as a consultant and educator to students, faculty, and staff. Participates in on-call administrative crisis services. Acts as a liaison between the university, community, and state committees and organizations. Takes an active role in Division of Student Affairs and university-wide initiatives. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Condition
Experience

Requires five or more years of professional experience in mental health counseling. Extensive training and experience in interpretation of mental and health records. Two years of full-time experience in a supervisory position, preferably within a higher education counseling center. Demonstrated record of strong clinical, organizational, and assessment skills and a history of student advocacy. Experience in budget and personnel management. Demonstrated effectiveness in conceptualizing and prioritizing objectives, and developing and implementing goals.

Knowledge

Extensive knowledge of clinical counseling and assessment. Ability to interpret and evaluate medical, psychological, and psycho-educational documentation. Knowledge of relevant current practice and associated legal doctrine. Knowledge of management techniques and collaborative efforts in an institution of higher education. Knowledge of university policies, community and campus services, and resources is desirable.

Education

Requires a Master's degree in counseling, counseling psychology, or related field. Terminal degree preferred. Should include appropriate coursework and supervised training in psychological, educational, and career testing and assessment; psychopathology, theories, techniques, human development, and career counseling.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. *Must be licensed or license eligible in the state of Texas. Must have a commitment to educational and professional development and be well organized. Must be able to work collaboratively with administrators, colleagues, campus departments, and student groups. Must possess strong student service orientation. Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to prepare documents, and to plan and record activities and client records. Requires occasional travel. Experience with on-call services. Some evening and weekend work is required. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. *Regular reliable attendance is required. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.


Serves as a member of the University’s Incident Command Structure during times of emergency or disaster and maintains appropriate National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications/trainings.
