- Description
The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students is directly responsible for providing effective leadership to the following areas: Residence Life and Housing, Dining Services; Office of Student Conduct; Clark Student Center; Student Involvement; Student Transition Programs; Recreational Sports; Wellness Center; Counseling Center; Bookstore; and Post Office. Responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining programs that contribute to the development, engagement, and success of students, and that are consistent with the mission of Midwestern State University. Additionally responsible for sound fiscal management, counsel of students, and student advocacy. Reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs.
- Examples
Coordinates and supervises the selection, training, and evaluation of directors in areas reporting through Student Affairs. Assists in the formulation of immediate and long-range plans for programs and services that foster student development, retention, and success of students. Promotes student development programs within the campus community through collaborative partnerships with academic and administrative personnel and departments. Plans and coordinates the annual Honors Recognition Banquet, conducts exit interviews for withdrawing students, oversees the process of general student complaints, and serves on university committees. Performs other duties as assigned.

- Experience
Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs administration. Demonstrated skill in working with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge
Demonstrated knowledge and application of student development theory; demonstrated history of collaborative partnerships; an understanding and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic and economic diversity of students and the community; a thorough understanding of the legal and regulatory environment of college student affairs; and knowledge of student conduct. Must have knowledge of fiscal management principles and practices.
- Education
Earned doctorate in counseling, higher education, college student personnel, or appropriate field preferred.
- Additional Requirements
Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must have the ability to teach, direct, guide and mediate; counseling skills for a wide range of student and staff concerns; a participative management style; experience and skill in fiscal management, personnel management, leadership, and communication. *Regular reliable attendance is required. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *Designated as a Responsible Employee as outlined by Title IX. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
Serves as a member of the University’s Incident Command Structure during times of emergency or disaster and maintains appropriate National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications/trainings.
