- Description
Serves as the public relations arm of the university. Responsible for releasing all official university news, except athletic news, and for projecting a positive image through a variety of mediums. Acts as a liaison between the university and the media to promote a positive image. Reports to the Chief of Staff and Assistant to the President for System, Governmental, and University Relations.
- Examples
Writes and distributes timely news releases, takes photographs of campus events, maintains good contacts with the media and the community, Provides a marketing plan for the image of the university. Makes decisions on advertising production and placement. Maintains a supply of promotional items. Produces weekly Update for campus distribution. Plans and manages Channel 2's information crawl. Works with the University Webmaster to develop a consistent and effective website. Serves on the Student Publications Board and as editor of the Sunwatcher magazine. Maintains files of newspaper clippings of all MSU related items. Produces annual versions of a public information brochure. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Physical Condition
- Experience
Three or more years experience in print or electronic media, public relations, or advertising. Must have the demonstrated ability to use a camera and have experience in layout design. Experience in making presentations before large groups. University experience in public relations strongly preferred.
- Knowledge
Must be able to write clearly and effectively. Must have a good knowledge of broadcast and print advertising practices and requirements; know how to write in Associated Press (AP) style; be knowledgeable in the use of computers and common office software programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. Must possess knowledge and ability to write, design and layout advertisements, brochures and other publications. Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, budgeting, and personnel management.
- Education
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in mass communications, journalism or marketing. Master's degree preferred.
- Additional Requirements
Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Must be able to make presentations before large groups; and be able to plan and adhere to a fiscally responsible budget. Must present a positive image for the university. *Regular reliable attendance is required. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
Serves as a member of the University’s Incident Command Structure during times of emergency or disaster and maintains appropriate National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications/trainings.
