Title
Academic Department Chair
Description

Reporting to the Deans of their respective colleges, Academic Department Chairs are responsible for administering and providing leadership for their academic programs. They also teach up to twelve hours per long-term semester.

Examples

Academic Department Chairs evaluate and counsel individual faculty members and students; plan and administer budgets; work with faculty to develop course curricula; serve on University councils and committee; assist in the recruiting and selection of new faculty members; assist in strategic planning and facilities improvements; assist in the development of recruiting plans for their respective programs; and prepare reports as needed.

Physical Condition
Experience

Must have extensive teaching experience and demonstrated records of scholarly research as well as relevant experience in academic administration and fiscal management.

Knowledge

Must have knowledge of trends and issues in higher education. Should also be knowledgeable in standard office practices and procedures as well as in the use of personal computers and commonly used office software programs, such as Word, Excel and Outlook.

Education

Academic Department Chairs must have terminal degrees within their respective disciplines and records of academic achievement that would warrant appointment as an Assistant Professor or higher.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community.  Must have strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; a commitment to diversity; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and administration.
