Title
Director, Small Business Development Center
Description

Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Midwestern State University Small Business Development Center. Directs the SBDC staff and maintains a close liaison with University staff and faculty. Responsible for budget administration and fund raising activity. Counsels, advises, and trains existing and start-up businesses in the twelve county area of responsibility in North Texas. Works with the Small Business Administration Offices in Dallas and Lubbock in assisting clients. Conduct seminars and workshops on business topics and address civic groups, chambers of commerce and other professional organizations in promoting small business and the services of the Small Business Development Center. Prepares quarterly activity and financial reports and other reports as needed. The Director reports to the Dean of College of Business Administration.

Examples

Works directly with existing and start-up businesses in preparing business plans, cash flow and break-even analysis, financial documents, taxes, loan applications, import/export opportunities, government contracting and any other business area where the client needs assistance. Conduct seminars and workshops on general business topics such as business plan writing, business start-up, and government contracting. Arranges for other seminars and workshops as needed by the small business community. Prepares yearly budgets for the SBDC and conduct fund raising activities in order to insure a cash match for the federal funding provided. Keeps the President and Director of the Division of Business advised on all SBDC activity. Directs the activity of the SBDC staff to insure that the needs of the small business community in North Texas are satisfied. Attends region, district, state and national meetings as necessary to maintain SBA standards and procedures.

Physical Condition
Experience

Business experience required, preferably as a business owner or manager. Should be expereienced with accepted business procedures including accounting, taxes, payroll, business planning, employment, and general federal and state regulations governing small business. Should have management experience.

Knowledge

Should have a good knowledge of the local business community and an excellent relationship with area banks, business groups, government entities, and the media. Must be knowledgeable in the use of computers and general business software applicable to small business.

Education

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must have effective written and oral communications skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be able to communicate effectively one-on-one and with large groups. Must have supervisory skills and be able to be work on multiple projects at the same time. Must be able to plan and work within a fiscally responsible budget. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
