Title
Librarian, University
Description

Responsible to the Provost for the administration of the university library. This includes recommending the appointment, promotion, or termination of all library personnel, supervision of their work, preparing and administering the library budget, and reviewing purchase requisitions for library materials and services. The University Librarian represents the library faculty to the university administration, keeps faculty and staff informed of library resources and services, policies, procedures, and information systems that make for efficient library operation.

Examples

Prepares the annual budget, especially for maintenance and operation, travel, etc. and recommends merit raises when funds permit. Recommends appointment and termination of library staff. Assumes leadership for long and short range planning. Prepares annual reports. Reviews purchase of library materials. Assures proper maintenance of library facility. Assumes leadership in planning future needs of the library, especially in the area of technology, and works in this area with the Information Systems Department and the Director of Extended Education. Serves as a research partner for the College of Liberal Arts.

Physical Condition
Experience

A minimum of five years experience in library administration as a Director or Associate Director of an academic library. Additional library experience as a department head in public or technical services preferred.

Knowledge

Computer literacy a must. Excellent written and oral communication skills, and good general organizational skills. Should have the ability to see the broad role of the library in the mission of the university, and the ability to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.

Education

A graduate with a Library/Information Science degree from an ALA accredited program. A graduate degree in a subject area preferred. A doctorate in Library/Information Science or in Higher Education Administration desired.

Additional Requirements

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Strong interpersonal skills, oral/written communication skills, computer/keyboard skills, both for mainframe and PC; technical skills peculiar to libraries (reference, cataloging, serials control, etc.). Supervisory management and problem-solving skills. The ability to see and to fit the library into the overall educational goals of the university. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
