Title
Museum Curator, Collections and Exhibitions
Description

The Museum Curator is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the exhibition program and the permanent collections of the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at Midwestern State University. Primary responsibilities include planning, managing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating all exhibition initiatives, for both temporary exhibitions and permanent collections, including exhibition design, interpretation, programs, marketing, evaluation and articulation of impact. The curator works as a team member and participates in a culture of philanthropy, including strategic marketing. Administers the exhibitions and programs of the Museum within the framework of approved policies, plans, and budget. Develops goals, plans, calendars, reports, recommendations, and budgets related to exhibitions and collections and their associated programs. Reports to the Museum Director.

Examples

Dynamically and creatively connects museum activities with university and community priorities. Researches, plans, curates and produces exhibitions and related audience engagement programs. Oversees the acquisition, documentation, maintenance, care, and records of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Implements the Collection Management Plan and the Collection Development Plan. Implements a collection development plan through the collaborative recommendation of works of art for acquisition that support the museum’s academic and public engagement roles. Constructs, oversees and updates the Museum’s strategic Exhibition Plan. Supervises the care and use of the collections by ensuring proper storage, handling, conservation, and exhibition techniques. Supervises the collections and loan records including inventories, condition reports, and cataloguing. Supervises the accessioning, identification, classification and cataloguing of objects in the Museum's collections. Supervises de-accessioning objects in the Museum's collections according to the Collection Management Plan. Monitors storage areas for collection security and environment. Reviews and advises on collection insurance values and requirements. Prepares budgets, reports, and billing records for the Exhibitions and Collections area. Oversees production of condition reports for in-coming and out-going loans. Oversees development of timelines and individual responsibilities for installation and de-installation of each exhibition. Oversees and assists with transporting, crating, shipping, and handling of art works for in-coming and out-going loans. Oversees coordination of exhibition installation and de-installation. Writes or supervises the writing of brochures, label copy, and didactics to accompany exhibitions. Oversees maintenance of artist, donor, accession and exhibition files and updates to the collection database files. Assesses the conservation needs of art works in the permanent collection and recommends conservation care of artworks. Works with staff, faculty and partners to establish overall continuity of purpose, programs, and exhibitions. Provides images and exhibit information for publicity and marketing of exhibitions. Participates in Strategic Planning. Develops grants for museum programs. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

Ability to supervise and participate in educational activities, set up/breakdown events, lift large and/or heavy artwork, pedestals and tools, use various tools, and work on a ladder.

Experience

A minimum of four years relevant experience in a museum setting or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge

Required working knowledge of current museum best practices, including American Alliance of Museums Core Standards. Knowledge of object-based learning. Broad subject knowledge in art history. Knowledge of the identification, preservation, conservation, and cataloguing of artifacts and collections. Skill in designing and mounting exhibits, in support of a culture of engagement. Knowledge of budget management and fundraising practices and techniques. Ability to effectively supervise staff. Knowledge of research methods and techniques. Proficient in the use of personal computers and related software applications for word processing, spreadsheet and database.

Education

Master of Art or Art History or related field.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Excellent organizational, multi-tasking and time management skills. Public relations, interpersonal and oral and written communication skills including the ability to write grant proposals; the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships and to give presentations and media interviews. Skill in problem solving and making sound decisions. Must be available to work a non-traditional schedule including evenings and weekends and travel occasionally. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive (low) and requires a criminal background check.
