- Description
Responsible to the President of the University for the overall administration and management supervision of the University's Intercollegiate Athletics Program. Represents the program at the conference and national levels. Provides leadership and serves as the primary spokesperson for the athletic program. The employee provides supervision to the Executive Associate Athletic Director/Compliance, Associate Athletic Director/SWA, Assistant Athletic Director for Promotions, Marketing and Public Relations, Sports Information Director, Assistant Director, Corporate & Sports Development, Academic Coordinator, Head Athletic Trainer, Head Coaches, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Administrative Assistant. Maintains fiscal control over revenues and expenditures to ensure compliance with state and university policies and procedures. Prepares reports and performs other duties as required by the President.
- Examples
Works closely with head coaches to develop competitive sports programs; prepares the annual athletics budget; oversees the annual athletics fund-raising campaign, including but not limited to the Mustang Athletic Club, corporate sponsors, and the annual golf tournament. Supervises and coordinates all concession operations in D.L. Ligon Coliseum; works with the Chairman of the Kinesiology Department and Intramural Director concerning maintenance and scheduling of D.L. Ligon Coliseum, Don Flatt Gymnasium, practice fields, and the wellness center; works with the Chairman of the Kinesiology Department to provide a sports medicine program for the prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries; oversees and helps develop programs to publicize and promote specific athletic events; submits recommendations to the President as necessary to make decisions regarding goals, academics, capital expansion, staffing, and budget appropriations concerning the athletic department; ensures that coaching and administrative staff supports the Department and University's joint commitment to academic achievement, which entails helping student-athletes to make progress in completing his/her degree within a five-year period; oversees all fiscal and administrative operation through the Executive Associate Athletic Director and Associate Athletic Director/SWA; promulgates budget guidelines and approves final submissions for each area; develops long-range plans to determine need for and feasibility of constructing or upgrading athletic facilities; keeps the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee informed in all areas of the Athletic Department; serves as a member of the Administrative Council; hires and conducts scheduled evaluations of the work performance of employees supervised.
- Physical Condition
Must have the physical ability to climb stairs in order to gain access to bleachers, press box, etc.
- Experience
Five to ten years experience in athletics administration or related field. Budgeting experience essential. Good communication skills required.
- Knowledge
Must have effective people skills and be able to maintain good relations with a variety of constituencies, i.e., students, faculty, alumni, boosters, the media, and the community.
- Education
Master's degree required, preferably in Kinesiology or Sports Administration; however, practical experience may be substituted in lieu of Kinesiology or Sports Administration degree.
- Additional Requirements
Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must have a working knowledge of NCAA Division II rules. Must have good leadership skills and have the ability to manage a diverse staff. Must be able to handle stressful situations. Knowledgeable in the use of personal computers. *Regular reliable attendance is required. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. * Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.
