Manager, Chemical Safety

Responsible concurrently for the management of the university's chemical usage in the McCoy College of Science, Mathematics and Engineering (~75% of time) and chemical use across the university's other colleges and non-academic departments (~25% of time). The position provides management and technical service in the purchase, stocking, distribution, use and disposal of chemicals and chemical laboratory supplies. Develops, manages, and implements university chemical hygiene plans (CHPs) to ensure compliance with EPA regulations, OSHA laboratory standards and the University Crisis Management Plan. Reports to the Dean of the College of Science, Mathematics and Engineering.


Advise faculty in the McCoy College of Science, Mathematics and Engineering (MCOSME) with the preparation, setup and breakdown of chemical demonstrations; Work with faculty in the development and implementation of lab experiments;  Advise faculty and staff working outside of MCOSME on chemical usage in classroom- and studio-related activities, and staff in the Facilities Department on chemical usage in support activities for MSU;  Coordinate suppliers and managing a system for requisition, purchase, receiving and distribution of chemicals;  Maintain a complete chemical stockroom inventory, SDS, and minimum stocks of items in MCOSME and a chemical inventory for MSU's other colleges and departments;  Maintain a safe operating environment by becoming familiar with appropriate work place safety regulations and enforcing the CHP;  Coordinate collection, packaging, handling, and disposal of hazardous waste associated with laboratory, research and other MSU activities;  Attend continuing education classes to remain current on changing regulations;  Recommend, develop and deliver chemical safety training for employees;  Conduct regular inspections and recommend improvements to workplace procedures and employee chemical safety and awareness programs;  Investigate chemical spills to determine their cause, and identify preventative mechanisms;  Become familiar with EPA Regulations regarding hazardous waste management and maintain records and reports as necessary, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS)  .

Physical Condition

Moderate physical activity required with occasional lifting of objects weighing more than fifty pounds. Must be able to work at a computer desk for extended periods. Must be able to crawl, stoop, and stand for extended periods of time.


Work experience in laboratory management or chemical inventory management a plus.


Working knowledge of chemistry and chemical hygiene. Position requires ability to acquire and maintain training and certifications to sign hazardous waste manifests to ensure that shipments are in full compliance with Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180) the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Willingness to pursue additional qualifications for certification as a Chemical Hygiene Officer in the National Registry of Certified Chemists. Wide range in knowledge of computer database management and skill in use of PC based computer programs. Excellent organizational skills. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Outlook, and Explorer.


Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field required.

Must be accessible and able to respond appropriately, in person or otherwise, to urgent or emergency situations that arise on weekends and in evenings. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, strong leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and consensus building skills. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *A valid Texas driver's license is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod) and requires a criminal background check.

Serves as a member of the University’s Incident Command Structure during times of emergency or disaster and maintains appropriate National Incident Management System (NIMS) certifications/trainings.
