Senior Business Consultant

Supports the mission of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to promote growth, expansion, innovation, increased productivity and improved management for small business clients. Should have an overall understanding of business management as well as business financial statements and ratios. Must possess understanding of implementing technology as it relates to small business with experience in modern marketing techniques. Will work with rural communities and other stakeholders for specialized support based on communities' entrepreneurial needs. Responsible for conducting client and stakeholder surveys, analyzing and reporting performance metrics. Involved in business organization and networking groups. This position will focus on technology and rural development. Reports to the Director of the SBDC.


Consults with clients from all social-economic and educational backgrounds in areas related to accounting, finance, purchases and sales, importing and exporting, existing and start-up businesses. Assists in the preparation of business plans, financial projections, financial and breakeven analysis, and business evaluations. Concentration in technology and its application to business and marketing. Must relate well with and represent the SBDC professionally with stakeholders. Prepares and conducts business seminars and workshops tailored to audience needs. Assists in seeking funding options. Responsible for surveying SBDC clients and stakeholders. Oversees SBDC internship students. Involved in business organizations and networking groups. Other duties as assigned.

Physical Condition

Ability to travel to other counties and to professional development conferences. Ability to present seminars/workshops and attend meetings.


Small business consulting experience is required. Knowledge of accounting principles, record keeping, financial statements and ratios a must. This position will focus on assisting clients with business technology tools and education as well as developing rural relationships to help pave the way for possible other programs. Previous experience with SBDCs, surveying tools, rural communities, growing and building stakeholder relationships, and funding research is very desirable. Ability to grow established and develop new stakeholder relationships.


Knowledge of business accounting and finance as well as all phases of small business management. Must have ability to assess viability and potential of clients and be able to determine assistance required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications. Must possess understanding of implementing technology as it relates to small business with experience in modern marketing techniques. Must have familiarity with rural entrepreneurial environment.


Bachelor's degree required.

Requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, both with individuals and with groups. Capable of discussing and explaining business topics to all educational backgrounds in a professional manner. Must be able to maintain confidentiality in working with clients. Must be able to work independently and as a team member. Travel is required. 40 hours of professional development training required annually. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive (mod) and requires a criminal background check.
