Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome to MSUTexas Fraternity and Sorority Life! Your student will have many opportunities for involvement at Midwestern State University, and we’re pleased that he or she is considering fraternity or sorority membership. Being a member of a fraternity/sorority is about making lasting friendships and enhancing your personal development by committing to the ideals of your organization. By joining a fraternity or sorority, your son or daughter will be joining hundreds of others on our campus in search of leadership opportunities, community involvement, and life-long friendships.
For many years, fraternities and sororities have promoted scholarship, leadership, service, and friendship. Our Greek community is filled with students of varying backgrounds and has a very rich history on our campus and is one of our most proud traditions.
We look forward to working with your student as a part of our community. This website has additional information about programming and recruitment. Please contact us with any questions, concerns, compliments or suggestions about your student's fraternity/sorority experience at MSU. Fraternity and sorority membership continues to have a very positive impact for thousands of students each year at MSU and across the country; we hope that your son or daughter finds the same to be true as well.
Sincerely,
Student Leadership and Involvement
A Parent’s Guide to Greek Life
As a parent, it's a good idea for you to learn about fraternities and sororities so you can help your son or daughter make the best decision about whether or not he or she should be part of Greek Life or to help them balance their academics and chapter involvement if they are already a member. For many parents, the Greek community conjures up images of Animal House. That's simply not the reality! There are many myths about the Greek community, but the reality is that men and women in fraternities and sororities are committed to their academics, volunteer time in the community, develop and strengthen their leadership skills, and form a campus network with other Greeks.
Greek organizations are groups of men and women who come together to form a personal network of individuals with similar ideas, interests, and a mutual pursuit of a well-rounded college education. Advantages include:
- A support group to help make the adjustment to college easier.
- Scholastic resources to help student achieve their academic goals.
- Leadership skills acquired through hands-on experience.
- Encouragement to get involved and maximize their potential on campus.
- Opportunities for active participation in community service projects.
During this year alone, thousands of dollars have been raised and countless hours of service donated for local and national charities such as; The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society, among many others. Members of our community have also participated in leadership development retreats as well as attended regional and national level conferences gathering hundreds of fraternity and sorority members from around the country.
While Greek Life has many benefits and is great for some students, it's not for everyone. If your student decides that joining an organization is the right decision, make sure he researches the different chapters thoroughly. You should discuss with your son or daughter what he/she would like to do and then support his/her decision.
